SMH: Rail threat to Bulldogs

Train crews are threatening to boycott services to and from Bulldogs rugby league games after a series of violent attacks, some involving the team's fans.
The drastic measure could affect Sunday's Bulldogs-Canberra clash at Telstra Stadium, stranding thousands of fans who use the train to Olympic Park to attend the game. It is part of a broader campaign to boost security for travellers and rail crews across the network.
On Monday night, a driver reported three "molotov cocktails" were thrown at a train between Bankstown and Yagoona stations.
The secretary of the NSW Rail, Tram and Bus Union, Nick Lewocki, said delegates would take a proposal to members in rail depots across Sydney to boycott dangerous stretches of track unless the State Government reinforced rail security staff, including putting police on trains to and from Bulldogs games.
The union is worried about the safety of drivers at night, especially on the Bankstown and Richmond lines.
"Our members have said enough is enough," Mr Lewocki told the Herald last night. "We will not run trains on the affected lines and we will not stop at the affected stations after dark. It's not worth the lives of our members."
Drunk and violent Bulldogs fans - identified by their jerseys - had almost destroyed a carriage after a June match. "They get on the train and they're pissed and throwing bottles. Other passengers and the crews just can't put up with it any more. Our guys are not seeing the sort of police presence that was promised."
Train drivers met yesterday, in the lead-up to Sunday's game at Telstra Stadium, to demand RailCorp honour a promise to to upgrade security. They want police on trains carrying fans and, on other dangerous lines, a rapid-response system, so police in patrol cars can pursue offenders if they flee a train when it pulls in at stations.
Five years ago, Bulldogs officials met RailCorp and union representatives and promised to control their supporters.
This latest embarrassment will not help the Bulldogs' image problem. At the weekend, a lower-grade player was accused of assaulting a bouncer at a pub before fleeing in a stolen car, then dumping it outside Maroubra police station. And the first-grade Bulldog Brad Morrin faces the judiciary tonight on a biting charge.
Anarchy on trains has spread beyond games. Mr Lewocki said parts of the Bankstown and Richmond lines had become virtual no-go zones. Cases include:
- Up to 20 youths dressed in Bulldogs jerseys vandalising a carriage in just eight minutes as it travelled between Olympic Park and Lidcombe after a June match;
- Two youths wielding clubs attacking a driver at Richmond station in July. Traumatised, he took sick leave.
- A man wearing a balaclava and wielding a baseball bat stopping a train between Bankstown and Yagoona by putting rocks on the trackside signals to turn the lights red. The driver radioed ahead to determine the line was clear, then inched forward, forcing the man to step aside.
Rail Corp is investigating cases of vandals sabotaging signals, forcing trains to stop, then spraying graffiti on carriages.

So if they can identify them by their jerseys why can't they identify them and f**king well arrest the idiots?

As for the rest of the accusations - people throwing molotovs at trains around Bankstown and Yagoona - where's the proof that it was Bulldogs fans - or even any sort of football fan?

Seems to me they've added some of CityRail's other vandalism problems and tried to make it sound like the club's responsible for all of it.

true, but it's just that it happened in "Bulldogs territory" and adds another element to the story so I'm guessing they'll just run with it as being "Dogs fans"

I don't believe the article was claiming that, so jump off the front foot and get onto the back foot. In fact just sit down altogether.

Well it's poor reporting. Simpletons who don't read entire articles and just take main points from it won't realise only two of the listed incidents there actually have connections with Canterbury and the remainder are general incidents. Richmond line FFS?

Even Hurri, an Eels fan agrees with me on that front.

it would've been interesting to see what would've happened if the Molitov incident happened say at Redfern or Richmond or Campbelltown or Wollongong

I also find it funny that these things come out at the same time as on field incidents

Brad Morrin is on a biting charge
as reported a Dogs lower grade player is on an assult charge & getting away in a stolen car

it just seems that if something happens on the field there happens to be reports come out of things happening off the field and/or with the fans. The report even states that the incidents that were done by people in Dogs jerseys happened in June, it is now August

for f**ks sake - i'll admit it when its warranted that we give ourselves a bad name...but this is simply a case of the media using a totally irrelevant event to make us look bad. The incident happened on monday night...report the incident, not why its the f**king bulldogs fault. We didn't even play on monday night.

"this latest embarrasement"...FMD!! this incident was totally unrelated to bulldogs fans. While incidents may have happened back in June or whenever, its outrageous that they can claim this incident as an embarrassment to the bulldogs. Malcolm, take them to court, surely you must have a case.

its a case of colourful journalism mattyg that has been carefully bound to illustrate a need for preventative security

no mention of the 'cocktail incident' being dog supporters on the monday night

but i agree - first read it can be perceived as targetting a common denominator

Well that's the simpletons' fault. Only an idiot would read that article and come away with the idea that Bulldogs fans threw the molotov cocktails.

You see, Bulldog fans might go on and on about media bias (and, to be honest, we do it too much), but this sort of bullsh*t is exactly why. And it's this sort of bullsh*t which is why we're exactly right. What a freaken disgrace of a story.

MONDAY NIGHT!!!

What a joke.
