Smith is failing: the proof

He is a good coach - he does have some strong points however in exactly the same way that any player who puts on the number seven jersey is compared to Peter Sterling, any coach who is going to be in charge of the Eels will forever have Big Jack's shoes to fill until they win at least a premiership in the hearts of those who have been through those years when Jack was in charge - ala Misty Bee. I know many others have however we were probably all a bit younger than Misty (if I rememeber rightly you drove to the 86 GF MB??)

John Monie had to live in Gibson's shadow once he was in charge and did so until we won in 1986. Many will argue that Cronin and Hilditch didn't have the cattle however the fans still hungered for that success started by Jack.

Parramatta was blessed with success during that era and just before - having been involved in the finals from 1976 - 1986.

1987 until 1997 were lean years and the success we have had since Smith has taken over has delivered everything apart from the premiership.

If Smith doesn't win a premiership during his remaining time whoever takes over will be judged on whether they can deliver it as well.

I still like Smithy though.

But do you think he's a good coach?

i think he's an excellent coach.... just unlucky at the end of the year!. In my opinion he is as good as Gould, Fulton, Anderson etc.

So after 36 years are Cronulla just as good a club as Parra were after 36 except they get unlucky at the end of the year?

OK, i'll go into it a little bit better!. Smith is definitely a good coach, but has never really had the players to win the comp ie Fittler and Johns. People say how good Jack Gibson was but look at the players he had - Kenny, Sterling, Price, Cronin, Ella, Grothe etc. He had a team full of superstars whereas teams these days really only have just the one which the rest of the team gets built around.

I said that he was unlucky due to his grand final performances. The grand finals he has lost were all poor performances by the team he coached. Saints were miserable in 92 & 93 and Parra were in 2001. Not one team he has coached in a grand final has performed well on the day. I think he's cursed, but he never has had the games best player at any stage.

The same could be said for the Sharks.... how many legends has that club produced?. Steve Rodgers.... big deal he was only a centre, not a five eighth or halve.

If Brian Smith had Dymock and Smith in 2001 things may of been different as they were the closest to game breakers he has ever had.

So my conclusion is this!. Brian Smith is probably unlucky because he has never coached a team full of superstars ie Parra in the 80's and Broncos in the 90's or a team that had the games best player at the time. Gould, Bennett and Fulton have all experienced this.

You really have no life do you, Misty?

Seriously, you redefine obsession, lol, it is hilariously disturbing.

If you wanna get back at Smith for cutting you back at St. george go have the balls to do it to his face. Even with his hip replacement he would put you on your ass, roflmao

And for the record, we did not finish 8th in 2002. After the Minor Premiership we were placed 6th, and after being eliminated int he first round of the finals we were placed 7th (because Canberra also lost and they came into the finals at 8th, and thus remained there). Please get your facts right before you being posting graphs-of-obsession.

Brian Smith cannot coach teams to the next level........what i mean is that he can get teams up to a grand Final & then cannot come up with the goods on the big day,

1992- St George
1993- St George

1996- Bradford
1997- Bradford

2001- Parramatta

This is clear indication that when it matters he cannot produce the goods....another example of this is this year & last!!

Where in a situation that we needed Brian to pull a coaching master stroke to get us out of this hole......he hasn't achieved this though!!

I still maintain Brian has become rusty & stale at our club & this is clearly reflecting on the players performances this year & last!!

God damn it I've still got no say in the matter.
Although if I did I'd still give him next year. He has rebuilt the team again and I think next year will be a big year.
Another season with more losses then wins and my view might change.

Well with the recruitment for next year there should be no excuses & shown the door if we don't achieve atleast top 4 spot....i think im being resonable.....7 years at our club, he no's the expectations, players, organisation in general....there shouldn't be any excuses!!

I feel Dennis has placed to much Faith in him just like when he showed to much faith in the likes of Greg Drake, Cameron Blair, Stu Gailbraith, Ryan Schofield, John Fearnley, Joe Bartolo!!.....is Dennis to soft???

Catanach was cool

and Stuey had plenty of glory - he led the revival against Newcastle from 20-0 down at half-time (when 20 was a bloody big lead) and the game against the Broncos at ANZ in 93, which is one of the greatest upsets ever staged.

I must say Michael Buettner was the star in the game against the Bronco's....he scored all the points!!

And Catanach wasn't cool!!

yeah Buetts got the points, but c'mon everyone worth a grain of salt knows that doesn't automatically mean no one else was a star that day
