Smithys' weekly email for the Eels members.....

Like all of you, I was really disappointed with our performance on Saturday night, and we are all hurting as a result. The Tigers kept playing a methodical style of football that we were unable to better when given the appropriate opportunities.

There were certainly some 50/50 moments in the game, as there are in all games, but there is no doubting that the Tigers deserved to win the game. Who knows how the match would of turned out had Burty not been ruled to have gone touch in goal in the opening minutes?

Playing in the NRL means you have to ride out your bad luck and be good enough to ride the wave of good luck when it finally comes in. Yes, we have had truck loads of bad luck this year with the amount of injuries, but at the same time we have not played with the patience to grab hold of the good luck when it has come our way.

The bye this week gives us all the opportunity to sped time with family and friends, who are doing it just as tough as the players and staff. I cannot look ahead and tell you what is going to happen in our final four games in 2004, but I can tell you what is not going to happen. We will not give up. It is not the Parramatta way.

Parramatta way, Discipline, Strong Defence, Entertainers in attack, giving it all.

The perfect image: Pricey waiting at the goal post with every penalty goal attempt by the opposition in the faintest hope that it will rebound. He never gave up.

What about the gang tackle that drove over that doggie into touch in the 86 GF...that's the Parramatta way!!!!!

that email from Smithy is seriously depressing. He sounds gutted which i can appreciate, but he also sounds like he has no idea what he needs to do to get the team firing for the final 4 matches. I have been fairly patient with him throughout the tough times, but this weekly message didn't exactly sound confident or positive. Perhaps he has finally given up?!!

I guess what for the rest of the year you need to do the following 2 things

Not win the spoon

and to get some hope for next season - great junior talent ready for next season to mix with some of the great names that will join your club next year

Every club has a bad patch and I doubt yours will last long at all - you will be back into the finals next year even with Smith as your coach and hopefully we will be joining you guys ;-)

Under Smith, the Parramatta way has been to have marshmello hitups, a 5/8 who can't pass, a neurotic halfback under constant threat of sacking, and a century long contract for the coach that delivers the above!

Not to mention:

* Playing a youn halfback at 5/8

* Playing a hooker at lock

* Playing a winger at centre

* Playing a prop at second row

* Playing a decent 5/8 n Thorman at halfback with Wagon at 5/8
