What part of my post was "No"? lol

The AFL system DOES reward teams who lose finals with a double chance AND a home final. Whilst punishing the teams who win their finals.

The system we are using rewards teams who win finals.

One system rewards home and away performance (AFL), in a competition where everything isn't equal (everyone doesn't play each other twice), the other system (NRL) rewards the teams who show up and produce the goods in cut throat finals.

Frankly, if Newcastle come to Melbourne and defeat Melbourne, they deserve their home final. If Melbourne lose a home final to the 8th based team, they deserve to be punished.

We should be having this argument on the thread on the main board though :)

Bullsh*t - No way Newcastle deserve to get a home semi - They couldn't even win more games then they lost -

Manly wont get a home semi - But somehow a Newcastle side deserves one??

The storm only lost 5 times all year ....one loss and they play the rest of the year away

Newcastle could fluke a win....Say Smith was suspended, and cronk & slater go down injured......??

f**k, this is the toughest run we've ever had.

We'll have to play Dragons, Warriors, Melbourne and whoever in the GF, probably Bris or Manly. Last year really was our year...
Yeh, but going off last years week I and this years week I....last year we played better yet lost, this year we played worse against the premiers and won.
If we get thru week III the confidence will be sky high, momentum unstoppable
I reckon it'd be like 05 in our GF is in week III

So if Melbourne lose today, we play them next week in Sydney and the Knights get the Warriors at Newcastle. Is that correct?

This system might reward winners but gee, we finished 4th and play the team that finished 1st. The team that finished 6th has a loss this week and next week plays the team that finished 8th....they both then have the same prospect as us of playing off next for a place in the Grand Final.

I think I am right but I don't see this as totally fair. Sure, you have to keep winning but I know who I'd rather be playing...

Anyway, if Melbourne win it is all moot...

It would be Knights v Dragons in Newcastle with Warriors out.

The winner of Tigers v Storm would have to play against Brisbane in Brisbane (I would like to advoid the Broncos to the GF).

Really hope Melbourne win today.

Yes, it's called win your finals.

In an uneven competition (You speak of the respective records of Newcastle and Melbourne - Knights V top 8 12 times, Melbourne 10 times I think), the home and aways give you position in the finals, from then on you simply have to win.

You speak of luck, why should we give superduper double chances and home finals to teams who may have got lucky with the draw (Melbourne won 3 games away from home that I'd consider credible .... only 3) ... & then go on to lose a home final? Melbourne finishing 1st are one of two teams with a gaurenteed double chance and a home final against the team that finished 8th. If they blow that opportunity... boo hoo, cry me a river

Quite frankly, if 1st loses a home final to 8th, I have no sympathy. None for when the Storm did it, none when St George did it. The real clubs take that punishment and regroup - Melbourne ended up making the GF and showing they deserved to be there, St George didn't.

In saying all this, Melbourne won't lose today lol

who cares if you rate melbournes wins....they won full stop.

Melbourne will win today - then the warriors get the double chance- how is that rewarding the winners???

So Tigers win against the premiers and face sudden death -

Warriors lose and also face sudden death ....

How is that rewarding the winners?? And again Manly dont get a home final ...

Warriors came 6th, got pumped by 30 and get a second chance. We came 4th, beat last years premiers and end up in the same position as them. Basically us and the Broncos have swapped opponents for this week and are doing it all over again. Crap system.

I used to be a fan of the system. Look at the Storm. I have no issue with them getting a home final, even though they are a bunch of cheats. I have no issue with the team coming first going through to the preliminary if they win. But to get there by beating the team coming 8th is a joke.

On the other hand, its a joke if the Storm had lost today. They would have to play an extra game and lose home ground advantage for the rest of the season until the GF.

We should adopt the AFL System. For those who dont take an interest, Storm would have had to have beaten 4th to go through to a home prelim. If they had lost , they would have a home final against the winner of 6 v 7.

Re the home prelim in melbourne, NRL moves games around Sydney with the aim of getting more crowds. Maybe they should think about that re other states too.

We are rewarded with playing what is essentially meant to be the worst team left.

The Broncs probably actually get stitched up a little more than we do.

How's this for an out of left field idea -
Straight AFTER the second week of the finals (i.e. next week) the 4 participants are evaluated by a mini "Ladder" similar to a world cup grouping - Win Loss F A D
That way the week one winners still get their go at a second chance with one win if their For / against is good enough which it rightfully should be by virtue of playing a lesser side in Wk 1 and some sort of justice would prevail
I've given this about 20 seconds more thought than the time it took to write it so i reserve the right to be deluded..
then again..... ?!?

just for illustration purposes...we go into next week with +9...Warriors with -a bunch..... sounds good to me

week 2 of the finals has always been pointless

Week 1
A - 1 v 4
B - 2 v 3
C - 5 v 8
D - 6 v 7
Week 2
E - Loser A v Loser B
F - Winner C v Winner D
Week 3
G - Winner A v Winner F
H - Winner B v Winner E
Week 4
I - Winner G v Winner H

Solves all problems.

"week 2 of the finals has always been pointless"

not as far as the NRL..Ch 9 and club CEO's and accountants are concerned...seasons come and seasons go but in the meantime it's still business...right? the what's fair stuff is for the ex player commentators and the fans to ponder over...i'm sure the NRL can continue to withstand the odd bit of sarcasm and derision..oh BTW...as always business will always trump what's fair and/or sensible

We will play either Broncos or Warriors, don't fear either.

Staunch Words, you should atleast fear for respect BUT hey Lockyer last season nothing to fear there :sarcasm:

Manu had a shocker game in 2007 after that he bounced back and became easily the best winger in the NRL - nothing to fear here :sarcasm:

I hope Manu does turn up trying to make amends. Sometimes that harder that dude tries the more geniused he becomes.

Do you know what happened to Manu after his LAST shocking game in 2007?(That was 4 years ago by the way)

He came back angry and hungrier became the best winger in the NRL

The harder the dude tries (in your words) they meaner he gets
No smiles to god just plain old angry

I hope i can come back and give it to ya after the game

Arrogant SOB!!

I agree in part. I wasn't so much referring to the media/cash etc the game makes and wasn't calling to can it. It just needs a rejig to make week 2 actually sensible for the finals as well as remaining a cash cow. I don't think the current set up achieves that.

I agree, there was an article recently (Roy Masters from memory) regarding the NRL wanting to get similar money as the AFL, it stated that nearly the only way to do this, was to have more game time, I think the AFL can drag on for about 1/2 hr more than NRL can?
So cutting short or deleting games wont happen, TBH I wouldn't be surprised to see "Golden Point" go & periods extended maybe to quarters.
E.g. - 4 x 25min quarters, with 2 x 5 min & 1 x 10 min break, would give you 120 mins, which is obviously 30 mins longer than current?
Any thoughts?
