Something to Crowe about: Inglis trumpeted to US audience

Some people are overreacting a bit. If I was an American and some bloke was talking about a sport I've never heard of, would I be encouraged to check it out? Quite honestly, not in the slightest.

People say Crowe is good for the game. I agree... he's fantastic for the game here in Australia. Make no mistake though, Crowe isn't converting anyone or raising any awareness. And if you think this is how awareness of sports spreads, then good luck to you.

Sorry to be a downer.

Yes nothing any celebrity says will be remembered the general public. Every company in the world is stupid for having celebrities to sell their products everyone knows that no one trys to talk/dress/or be like their favourite stars.

Possibly not here but things are different in the US. Star power matters there and in America you only need a small percentage to get interested to make a difference.

The potential for League to expand is in the US and Eastern Europe - we just need to start realising it.

The NRL needs to get back on Spike or an equivalent station and stay there for a decade. We need to make Rugby League freely available and we need to push the benefits of our code to people that have not seen it before. We have a great product - it's physical and spectacular and the Yanks would go nuts over it.

Inglis is a big signing for Souths, however the guy seems a bit disillusioned, and from photographic evidence, quite fat at the moment.

He's had an unstable few months, but if Souths switch him on during the next few months he'll be a huge asset.

Personally, I think there's way too many peahearts in that team for a G.I to make much of a difference. But that's just me. I'm biased.. a bit.. maybe. Fancy a GF winning team with Sandow at number 7.. I just don't see it.

You're not alone mate, everyone who knows a thing or two about Rugby League knows that Souths are the biggest pretenders in the competition and will not come close to winning the premiership until they replace Sandow with an actual decent half and fix up their backs, its filled with both old & over rated players. Will they make the top 10? Probably not lol

which brings me to my point.

That is just not the case. Inglis isn't NRL's LeBron.

He's the NRL's Jeff Farmar

:lol::lol:

Obviously he might not be the number one player in the NRL but he'd be right up there. Crowe is trying to pander to the U.S audience...what should he say?

"Well we've signed Greg Inglis, which is like signing Deron Williams."

He'd be in the top 20 players in the NBA but as if making a comparison to him would be anywhere near as impressive. If you watched the clip you could hear the rumbles of appreciation from the audience when he compared him to Lebron.

So we need Crowe to be completely literal and unbiased when trying to impress the people of the U.S?

Because hyperbole and flashiness will definitely not work on Americans

Heard Crowe say signing Inglis was the equivalent of LeBron James

lol

LeBron earns more money in 12 months than Inglis will make in his career.

LeBron is known in many more countries and watched by a much larger audience than Gary Ingles too

Its called an analogy but it looks like that concept went completely over your head.

Im pretty sure Crowe didn't mean that the two would pull the same money and crowds.

SOUTH SYDNEY owner Russell Crowe has used an American late-night talk show appearance to reveal the salary of prize signing Greg Inglis, comparing him to NBA superstar LeBron James while also confirming coach John Lang would be leaving his post at the end of next season.
Crowe, on a promotional tour for a new film, told The Tonight Show host Jay Leno that Inglis's three-year contract with the Rabbitohs was worth $1.8 million, the figure reported by the Herald last week when his signing was announced after the star centre backed out of an agreement with Brisbane.
''In order to put it into perspective for you guys, it's like we just got LeBron James … In the rugby league world it's just gigantic,'' Crowe said.
Advertisement: Story continues below
Asked by Leno what he was paying the 23-year-old, Crowe said: ''It's nothing compared to American money but he's got a three-year deal that's worth roughly about $1.8 million.'' He added that at that salary, under the constraints of the NRL salary cap, Souths were ''tapped out''.
''We have a coach … John Lang, who is going to finish out the year then we bring in the new coach the next season,'' Crowe said. ''We had a plan that we were going to put a little bit of extra money aside for that new coach so he had some flexibility under the cap. That's all gone now.''
The actor offered an insight into Souths' long-term pursuit of Inglis. The former Storm superstar initially decided to swap Melbourne for the Broncos before being convinced to head to Redfern Oval.
''He'd actually made a decision that he wanted to come to South Sydney,'' Crowe said. ''We do a lot of work in the community and we have a deep connection with the Aboriginal community in Australia. He's an indigenous fella. It was in the back of his mind. I'd been trying to get a conversation with him going for about five months but his manger [Allan Gainey] basically just said it wasn't going to happen. Then the team [the Broncos] that he was going to withdrew their offer to him.''
Of his ownership of Souths, and the direction of the club, he told Leno: ''It's starting to come together. I took the team over in 2006, as you know. We've gone from being an absolute basket case to being competitive and the next step is to go from competitive to dominant.''
The Inglis deal is still subject to an official release by the Storm, who are in dispute with Inglis over a $113,000 legal bill they want settled before giving the go-ahead.
The player, though, has joined Souths teammates at pre-season training, although his output is restricted after shoulder surgery.
''There is no release granted currently and I'm not sure there is one imminent,'' Storm chief executive Ron Gauci said. ''We haven't even seen the [Souths] contract yet so as the holder of the existing contract we haven't been able to approve it.''
Inglis was named yesterday in the Indigenous squad for the All Stars game at the Gold Coast in February but Souths insist he will be unavailable due to injury. ''Our medical people are saying he is not right for the game,'' Souths chief executive Shane Richardson said.
Bronco Justin Hodges was also named but will not play.

Love him or hate him, i think Rusty is good for rugby league.

The AFL would kill to have such a high profile international celebrity promoting their horrible game.

The AFL don't need it. They are already dominating the NRL in Crowds, TV, sponsorship, etc etc etc etc etc etc.

Imagine if the AFL DID have somebody as high profile as Russell...

But the closest thing to Rusty Victoria has is Eric Bana.

So what?

Crowe discussed rugby league to a US audience and obviously had to use analogys that they'd understand best. Who gives a sh*t if he said it was Farmar or not?

At the end of the day Inglis is a great signing for Souths and saying it was like LeBron was the best way to express that to an audience that don't know Inglis.

You'd probably complain that your peanut butter & jam sandwich used strawberry jam instead of raspberry jam.

Minor point, but didn't a lot of people (including some of our own supporters) say the same sort of things about Soward and Hornby?

They did. And the same has been said about almost every key player before they've proven themselves. Everyone has doubters and if the bloke proves himself those very same doubters say they saw it all along.

There were some rather vomit inducing photos in the Hunn a few years back where Guy Pearce took Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes to a Collingwood game. The article that accompanied it was even worse. I remember a photo in RLW years ago and Rusty got his hooks into Tom years ago and took him to Redfern for a Bunnies game donning scarves.

Also, I lol'd when Eric Bana went on Letterman and he was plugging Saint Kilda. They showed some footage and Letterman jokingly said that "that sport looks kinda gay", the crowd laughed but Bana was really offended!

Well, at least he's right for a change.

A smart move would have had the NRL and the Storm working overtime to finalise the Inglis contract, and try and get Crowe in the country and hold a press confrence to officially announce Inglis going to Souths and have it the same night as the GWS revealed their jersey.

Even a Inglis Q and A with the media would have taken a fair bit of attention off the unveiling.

What for? The only people who showed up at the GWS (Great Wank Stain) unveiling were the sychophant melbourne media, a rentacrowd and a few poor unfortunates that had to cater the do. And the 'grand unveiling' bit them on the arse because the orange rubbish, foolish name and the presence of the fat ponce sheedy made then look like a laughing stock.

And Russ might be a good actor and a passionate league bloke doing his best for the club he owns but have you ever seen him in an interview - he's as boring as batsh*t. And GI, great player that he is, is about as articulate as a dead jellyfish.

name me one other person in the world that could get as much publicity for a club/ the game as Crowe manages. If the NRL had any sense they would be working with him to have a coordinated effort to use him as an ambassador for the game and to tap into his contacts.

Big Mikey must love Souths as he never has his hoodie off in American Chopper!

The thing is that publicity is of no value to NRL.. You missed the entire point. This is Russell Crowe grabbing publicity for himself as though he is some sort of matyr. If you think they were sitting there glued to the screens and talking about Souths at the water cooler the next day then you are kidding.

More like the McDonalds line than anything, but hey. And the talk, if on this issue at all, would still likely include talk about the NRL.
