Sonny Bill talks hit snag over sponsorship

Sonny Bill Williams' contract negotiations with the New Zealand Rugby Union have hit a stumbling block over a sponsorship row.
Williams' controversial Sydney-based manager Khoder Nasser has secured a major promotional deal for the All Blacks midfielder but the company is a rival to a NZRU sponsor and the union has said no to the arrangement.
The Sunday Star-Times understands Nasser has demanded the union top up Williams' proposed one-year contract with the lost sponsorship monies but the NZRU has again refused.
The row casts into doubt Williams' future after the world cup including whether he will still now join the Blues Super Rugby franchise who had won the war over the Chiefs to secure him if he remained in New Zealand.
Williams, who had only his first starting test for the All Blacks this year in Port Elizabeth overnight against South Africa, brought himself some negotiation time last week when he said he would not make any Super Rugby decision until after the Tri-Nations.
Nasser is in the United States and wasn't available for comment.
The NZRU's collective agreement with players allows it to veto any personal sponsorship or promotional deals if they conflict with one of its sponsors. Despite allowing Williams to box under his first contract, and any future one, sources say the NZRU told Nasser it would not bend its rules on sponsorship. Nasser's subsequent demand the union supplement the lost income has caused a stalemate that Williams will have gone into this morning's Port Elizabeth test knowing he has the ability to influence with a strong return to form.
Another indifferent display could have some in the union questioning whether Williams' value lies mainly in the marketing of the game and whether he is worth the riches and flexibility extended to Richie McCaw and Dan Carter.
There is also growing disquiet over Williams' boxing career after his form took a noticeable dive after a meaningless fight in June.

He hasn't really shown his potential. I'm sure he'd be dynamite against the minnow teams or the weaker home union ones but the top teams know exactly how to play him. He isn't anywhere near as 'busy' as Nonu around the park and his magical offload is so telegraphed it isn't funny.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out.

Its looking more and more like the NZRU signed him on reputation... he is turning into another Stephen Donald... outstanding in Super Rugby but cant make the step up International... oh well.. i see the Warratahs want him and the reds as well... might be able to get a few more ticket sales out of him.

Waratahs, maybe.

Reds? He isn't good enough to make the starting 15. ;-)

Under ARU rules, all franchises - bar Melbourne Rebels - can sign two players from overseas; one an emerging foreign player who can still declare himself eligible for the Wallabies, and one senior star who is ineligible due to him playing Test or senior rugby for another country...he can't join the Tahs as they have signed Sarel Pretorious...but he may still be absle to join the Reds. Now that's a tantalising thought - SBW in a Reds jersey!

I doubt he would want to play for an Aussie franchise just yet.
Loyalty isn't one of his strong suits and he's good mates with Quade as well as sharing the same manager as Quade...i think (hope) that if he does decide to play in Oz, it will be with the Reds.

How long till Khoder gets Mundane to get Weidler to write a piece about how this is just another case of keeping the "black" man down? I can't wait till this caravan of fools drops dead.

From Stuff http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/opinion/5505017/Sonny-Bills-World-Cup-spot-could-be-in-stands

Sonny Bill's World Cup spot could be in stands

OPINION: All Blacks fans mightn't get to see too much of Sonny Bill Williams at the Rugby World Cup. The latest selection to play the Wallabies in the Tri-Nations finale in Brisbane on Saturday night is another pointer to that.
This isn't quite the All Blacks' top side but it's pretty close to it.
Halfback Jimmy Cowan and top-rated No 6 Jerome Kaino get a bit of a breather after handling senior duties against South Africa last weekend and utility Israel Dagg won't be backing up either after his sensational return to test rugby after more than a year out.
But there's no room for Williams in the 22 to play Australia in a match that will decide the Tri-Nations title and provide both teams to stamp their authority on the eve of the World Cup.
And that could be a sign of the future.
Williams has drifted well behind Ma'a Nonu in the pecking order for the No 12 jersey now and if he can't get a start, there just doesn't appear to be the room for him on the bench.
Halfback and first-five cover is required, leaving just one other berth for a back. Williams doesn't offer anything other than his game at second-five and is, as yet, an unproven talent at centre in test rugby.
The All Blacks have signalled their preferences in the World Cup squad and it's all about versatility, particularly for backs beyond No 12.
That's why specialist wings Sitiveni Sivivatu and Hosea Gear were jettisoned.
That's why Isaia Toeava sits on the bench in Brizzy.
That's why the likes of Dagg and Cory Jane will be preferred to Williams for a bench role.
That's why he might even be pressed to get past Richard Kahui for a spot on the pine, given that the big Waikato player can cover both midfield position but is also a proven talent as an international wing and would have a crack at fullback in an emergency.
It's a tough time for Williams.
He will be stoked that he has achieved his prime goal of making the Rugby World Cup squad. But getting much action, particularly at the business end of the tournament, might be a very tough assignment for him.
Williams had a solid effort against the Springboks in Port Elizabeth in his first start of the year last weekend. He was highly effective in defence in a bruising midfield encounter where he put in some big hits. There were a couple of glimpses of his offloading skills but it wasn't a startling attacking performance from him.

Nonu's attack is more direct and, for the moment, more effective in getting across the gain line.
There has been a lot of talk by various people about how Williams' form has gone stale since he put his boxing gloves on in mid-season for the Crusaders.
It was a point even acknowledged by the All Blacks selectors last week.
No one denies Williams has some special qualities. Quite how he gets his spark back now the World Cup is upon us will be interesting.
Will he use his time on the sidelines to be motivated to really put some big heat on Nonu?
It's easy to see Williams terrorising Japan in Hamilton and there's a good bet he might be used in the final pool match against Canada to ensure Nonu gets a rest before the quarter-finals.
But from there on, Williams might find himself like the rest of us - watching the Rugby World Cup.

Overpaid, overrated primadonna who is more trouble than he is worth. It's a team game, SBW is all about the self. **** off to boxing, where it can be all about him and he doesn't have to worry about team loyalty or thinking of anyone except himself.

''Bra the more I think of this bullshit the more I think I gotta get yu (sic) out of that environment,'' Mundine tweeted to Williams.

WTF?? f**k Mundine is a cancer. SBW is a grown man (I think) who has more than enough money to take care of himself. If he wants out of "that environment" then he can get himself out of "that environment". He doesn't need daddy Mundine to fly to his rescue.

The fact is that if SBW wasn't SBW then he wouldn't even have made the WC squad. He had a very good Super Rugby season playing in a dominant Crusaders team, but he's being shown up at Test level.
