Sonny Bill Williams' contract negotiations with the New Zealand Rugby Union have hit a stumbling block over a sponsorship row.
Williams' controversial Sydney-based manager Khoder Nasser has secured a major promotional deal for the All Blacks midfielder but the company is a rival to a NZRU sponsor and the union has said no to the arrangement.
The Sunday Star-Times understands Nasser has demanded the union top up Williams' proposed one-year contract with the lost sponsorship monies but the NZRU has again refused.
The row casts into doubt Williams' future after the world cup including whether he will still now join the Blues Super Rugby franchise who had won the war over the Chiefs to secure him if he remained in New Zealand.
Williams, who had only his first starting test for the All Blacks this year in Port Elizabeth overnight against South Africa, brought himself some negotiation time last week when he said he would not make any Super Rugby decision until after the Tri-Nations.
Nasser is in the United States and wasn't available for comment.
The NZRU's collective agreement with players allows it to veto any personal sponsorship or promotional deals if they conflict with one of its sponsors. Despite allowing Williams to box under his first contract, and any future one, sources say the NZRU told Nasser it would not bend its rules on sponsorship. Nasser's subsequent demand the union supplement the lost income has caused a stalemate that Williams will have gone into this morning's Port Elizabeth test knowing he has the ability to influence with a strong return to form.
Another indifferent display could have some in the union questioning whether Williams' value lies mainly in the marketing of the game and whether he is worth the riches and flexibility extended to Richie McCaw and Dan Carter.
There is also growing disquiet over Williams' boxing career after his form took a noticeable dive after a meaningless fight in June.
