SOO 13 Game 1: Official NSW Squad

Grant has been duded massively.

This can't be overstated.

Carney should also be there as we've changed our halves too f*cking much already.

What frustrates me most about Pearce's game is that he rarely chances his luck with a grubber kick or short punt in goal like Cronk does. Putting up a bomb may be difficult for the opposition fullback or wingers to catch under pressure, but it also makes it difficult for your own players to regain under pressure. Saying that, I think Pearce and Maloney aren't in the position where all the pressure to create attacking chances lies with them. Farah has shown he can direct a team from the front, plus I think he's primed to have a big series this time around after the end to Game 3 last year.

Agreed on both counts.

Very irritating that Pearce gets a free ride but in the past two series we have turfed Soward and Carney after both played well.

Gidley again, lol.

How he continues to make the Blues and Roos sides is one of sport's most hilarious mysteries.

All the attention on Hayne and Maloney when in reality I think it will be on the back of Hayne and Farah for our creative opportunities.

I'm fairly happy with the team, and I think we'll win.

Grant unlucky. Not a fan of Hoffman and who knows how much use Gidley will be.

The problem is not the coaches. The selectors are the issue. The selections have had this same air o inconsistency for years and years now. What is the actual selection criteria? If its form then it explains Ferguson but it doesn't explain the Morris twins. If its prior test form it explains the Morris twins but not why Grant was excluded. If its prior years yet form then why is Gidley selected? Gidley is only there for loyalty.

Anybody can be a utility player, however the idea is to have someone who can play well in the position that they find themselves in and Gidley has not done this previously.

He never plays as well for NSW as he does for the knights. That's the point.

He just isn't a rep quality player.

He's never played terrible for NSW either but that doesn't stop this place going into meltdown about him and inventing that's he's been constantly terrible in previous Origin performances. This place never lets the truth get in the way of a good Gidley bashing.

I can understand people believing there are better options though. I would have been quite happy with an extra prop and Lewis playing utility, or even someone like Carney. Although I agree with whoever said they're covering for Farah, they may even be aiming to give him a planned rest this year.

I presume you mean Pearce & Maloney?

But why not go in with more creativity ? Why would you limit it to the fullback and hooker?!

Crazy.

The bottom line: Gidley was always going to get picked for Origin from the day he was named in the Canberra test match last month.

'Not playing terribly' is not a threshold for origin. He'll it's not even a threshold for 1st grade.

The thing about Gidley is where does he get used? Farah's an 80 minute hooker, Hayne, Maloney and Pearce all play 80 minutes, Gallen, Lewis, Bird are all capable of that as well.

I can't see why NSW need a utility at all to be honest.

And you just know he's going to get plenty of time wether we need him or not.

No I agree. Hence why I would have been happy with certain alternatives.

I just think history tends to get rewritten on here when it comes to Gidley.

Its not a terrible team, but a couple of wtf selections. QLD must be glad Ben Creigh hasnt been picked. He scares the pants off them.

Woeful team. Picking inconsistent players on 2 weeks of decent games or out of form players barely playing at 1st grade standards, they're going to destroy us.

When is the last time a NSW based team has been league leaders without having 1 NSW player picked? Farcical. Laurie Daley has no idea.

And for once I agree with you. We don't need to carry a utility.

Obviously his dummy half play gets him the nod as he would be much better than Luke Lewis, who I look at as our "utility", in that position.

I'd think he will be seeing game time and a fair bit of it. Robbie will be pissed you would think. So will supporters if he wastes a bench spot that could have been filled by Grant. Daley must truly believe we've got enough up front to do the job. I think we are short a quality prop.
