Darren Lockyer a certainty for Man of the Match.

If I can get 6-1 I'm laughing but I doubt it.
Bet he's paying $4:50.

I'm going down to lay a hun on him right now if I can. The new touch board TAB system is a prick to find things.

Costigan in doubt for Origin III

July 3, 2007 - 8:01PM

Concerned Queensland officials have sent big-hitting forward Neville Costigan for scans after he was involved in a late training mishap.

Costigan bent his left hand back in a ball skill session towards the end of Tuesday's closed session and was in considerable pain and discomfort.

His condition will be reviewed in the morning when a decision will be made of whether he takes in place against NSW on Wednesday night.

Brisbane forward Dane Carlaw has joined the Queensland camp as their 18th man in case of an emergency but Costigan will have intensive treatment in a bid to play.

His intimidating presence will be needed with NSW signalling its intention to play aggressively with the inclusions and Cronulla pair Greg Bird and Paul Gallen.

Queensland has already lost one forward with Jacob Lillyman (eye socket fracture) replaced by North Queensland's Matt Bowen.

As Queensland prepare to move in for an Origin cleansweep at Suncorp Stadium, coach Mal Meninga cautioned his players to be on guard for a NSW side backed into a corner following reports one of their players had spoken out about Blues coach Graham Murray to the media.

Whether it happened or not, Meninga said it would still solidify the team and make them even more dangerous.

"I know the players called a meeting about it (the reports) and that alone spells danger for us because that can meld a side," said Meninga.

"I've seen it happen many, many times.

"We won't be underestimating their turmoil because probably a majority of times it makes you perform better."

Meanwhile, Meninga paid England-bound Brisbane utility Shaun Berrigan the ultimate compliment on the eve of his 15th and last Origin, describing him as one of the "characters" of the game and one of best utilities to have laced on a boot.

Berrigan, who's heading to Hull at the end of the season, was credited with turning Queensland's Origin fortunes around off the bench last year and his ability to play so many positions makes him a valuable asset to any side.

He's been a wild-card for Brisbane, playing halfback, five-eighth, centre and hooker in recent years.

His versatility has earned him a regular spot in Australian sides either starting or on the bench.

"He fills such a huge void in our footy side," said Meninga.

"The modern game demands you have a utility player but Berro offers more than that.

"He's good to be around, he's great off the field.

"He's a character and that's really important.

"Sometimes the game has got robots but he's certainly not one of the those.

"He's got a great competitive nature, he's got a fantastic attitude when it comes to game time and he never lets you down.

"He's got huge qualities as a player and a person and I wish him all the best in the future.

Meninga wasn't interested in how NSW would line up or in speculation their utility ace Kurt Gidley could start in the halves.

"I don't know and I don't care," he said.

"I don't know why coaches throw players around. We picked our side based on who is going to do a good starting job and who is coming off the bench and that's the way we'll remain."

Meninga did show just how relaxed he was, jokingly suggesting he'd put some shoulder pads on and don the headgear to play in the second-row when he was asked how he'd cover the loss of forward Jacob Lillyman.

Meninga was jesting when he said he could throw in 79 kilogram Matt Bowen into lock or the second-row.

Bowen, who's scored 15 tries in 15 NRL games this season, will be used when the big Blues forwards are wilting.

Meninga said he had no problems with skipper Darren Lockyer honing in on the pain of losing the third game of the 2000 series to NSW by 56-16 to drive him.

"You use anything you possibly can to motivate yourself and for Darren it's obviously the memory of 2000 and that's a good thing," said Meninga.

"He remembers getting thrashed and all those little antics the NSW guys came up with but we haven't talked about it as a team."

Not alot of depth in the second row at the moment with Croker, Thaiday and Flannery on the sidelines.

Gavin Cooper is pretty good, Corey Parker is ok, Thorn would do the job. All 3 are better than Jane Carlaw!

I'd go for Thorn. He's cute as well.
What?:?

Anyway, what about Corey Parker,I think he'd add to the intensity that Costigan has.

I don't know why the Qld selectors continually look past Parker, if Carlaw is half the player he is then I'll eat my hat.

No thanks, considering that Parker was the better of the 2 over the last couple of years and has done more than Carlaw has done this year despite being injured for most of it, I'm happy to keep it on my head, particularly such a stylish hat as that.

Refer to thread on Broncos about Darius Boyd ... you'll understand the Brad Thorn comment.

It's pretty quiet in this section of the bulletin board.

Last Origin two there were over 62 people in here.
There's only 13 people in here today.

Anybody reading this who's a QLD'er?

Can you tell me if Hunt will be replaced at fullback at any time in a positional switch?
If I'm going to put a few quid on Hunt for MOTM will it be chucking money away if the new south welshman Inglis is moved to fullback at some stage?

By the way....who got MOTM in the first game?

Me, I'm NSW. It hurts me to do this but I'm putting money on Lockyer and Hunt for MOTM.
I also wonder if there'll be sentimental value in Patricia Reciever? I think he's worth a little side bet as well.
So, those 3 for MOTM.

MOTM in game 1 was Johnathon Thurston.

As for Hunt being replaced at fullback, well there is a chance. I would not be surprised to see this happen:

Hunt>lock
Bowen>fullback
2nd rower replaced, johnson to 2nd row.

But it will depend on circumstances. There are a few options for queensland, this is just one of them.

As for chucking money on Hunt, well if you want a outsider he'd be a good bet. That said if I was to bet on the MOTM I may go with someone like Dallas Johnson.

That's right, Thurston did get it in game one.
I forgot.
Ohh yer, he got it but in everyones eyes Pricey was the better player.

Lockyerno 1

You think D. Johnston for MOTM? The MLB guy? Ain't he injured? Is it true that he made over 64 tackles in game 2?

If I put money on Hunt for MOTM then midway through proceedings they do switch him to wing then that automatically kills my bet.

I will put the majority of my money on Lockyer as he's long overdue for an award and Goose Gould was praising him thismorning on the radio.
If Gould is a channel 9 MOTM panelist then that's to Locky's advantage.

I hope you QLD'ers aren't too laxed going into this game. Over confidence can do weird things ya know?

The weak link in NSW is El Mazri. If Hodges is up against him then you watch him make a fool of that guy.
QLD will bombs away all night El Mazri's way.
And El Mazri has a bad habit of coming in too deep leaving his wing wide open so I can see Brent Tate scoring first try tonight somehow.
Or, is Bell out wide with Tate?
Who's Hodges wing man? Tate or ?

Personally, I think Hodges is the best center in the world.
