He was one of them though. Unclear where the sympathy comes from, the kid sucks. He's basically Luke Kelly

The bloke that replaced him is just as shit. That's the issue. They haven't got a half decent halfback
no half is going to look any good behind that poor forward pack. Look at how ordinary Cook has been over the last few years and he is a good player

I'd argue their shit hooker is part of the reason a decent pack gets dominated tbh.

But see my earlier post. They got a lotta problems

It all comes down to Demetriou. He let Reynolds go. A halfback who gave the side direction and was the glue that held the team together. He gambled on young Illias, who barely played any lower grades thanks to Covid with restrictions and cancellations in 2020 and 2021.

A couple of years later he signs a five eighth in Wighton. And Wighton wouldn't be cheap. So theoretically Demetriou replaced Reynolds with Wighton.

The money spent on Wighton could've gone towards signing a fast outside back and a middle forward. Or sign a halfback.

At the moment, Souths lack direction from a number seven, lack of speed out wide and a lack of aggression in the forward pack.

Demetriou's days look numbered.

When you tell the media you are the man to fix this and you’re already in charge you are a dead man walking

They wont solve anything long-term until they stop blaming everyone else for there own problems and look in the mirror and see they "DO" have a few problems and fix them.

With Souths its always someone else's fault and they love playing the victim card with a chip on there shoulder.

Until that changes they ain't going to be successful long term.
Cody's well balanced. He's got a chip on both shoulders.
The rest of the team are ok. Latrell ate all their chips.

I think James Graham and Cooper Cronk made some valid points about Souths after the match on Fox Sports coverage of the game. Cody, and to a lesser extent Latrell, create half gaps/moments and every time they do, try and turn it into "the big play". Problem is by doing so, when they don't come off, it often results in a handling error and change of possession, which puts a heavier toll on the team's energy as they have to defend more.

Instead of trying to turn every half chance into the big play all the time, they recommended that both try under playing it instead. That way it will come more in the flow of the game, and probably won't result in so many mistakes. Until they do, it wouldn't matter if they had a reincarnated Andrew Johns playing halfback for them, as Cody Walkler and Latrell are the one hurting them by their style of play.

They chased Dom Young and then backtracked saying they didn't have the cap space. Then we magically do and signed Wighton...

DEAL THAT BROKE BURGESS-BUNNIES

Phil Rothfield - September 12, 2023

Mario’s Italian restaurant at Broadbeach on the Gold Coast is normally packed with families and holiday-makers in January.

It’s not often you’d find Rabbitohs legend Sam Burgess there with two player agents, a wealthy businessman/third-party sponsor, plus Newcastle winger Dominic Young.

It became the dinner that would trigger the serious tension and falling out between Burgess and Rabbitohs coach Jason Demetriou that led to the former superstar recently walking out on the club.

The finer details are fascinating.

Burgess was on holiday on the Gold Coast when Souths paid the airfare for the English winger and try-scoring machine to join him for dinner.

Player managers Mario Tartak and Michael Cincotta, who look after Young, were there.

So too was Burgess and Young, plus a man known as ‘the art dealer’ – wealthy Souths fan Steve Nasteski, who has a history of financially supporting the club’s recruitment.

Burgess desperately wanted his fellow Englishman at Souths.

Young had just had an outstanding World Cup for England, scoring nine tries in four games.

All parties walked away confident a deal would be done.

As Young was weighing up his future at the Knights, Souths suddenly dropped off.

Burgess was overruled by Demetriou, football general manager Mark Ellison and CEO Blake Solly.

Their cap money had been used to extend Latrell Mitchell, Cody Walker and Damien Cook and they needed cap space to re-sign Tom Burgess and extend Cameron Murray.

Plus the Rabbitohs already had Alex Johnston, who is likely to break Ken Irvine’s all-time try-scoring record next season, on one wing. They also have high hopes that 18-year-old Indigenous star and local junior Tyrone Munro will emerge next year as one of the NRL’s best wingers.

So Burgess was not happy – and hasn’t been since.

Young ended up accepting an offer to join Souths’ bitter rivals the Sydney Roosters.

AJ will be lucky to break a sweat playing for the bunnies.

Selfish coach and teamates combined with a dramatic loss of pace, he will not break Irvine's record before he is unceremoniously dumped over Zoom.

Jye Gray in reggies yesterday:

20 runs for 271m
1 try
4 linebreaks
1 try assist
1 linebreak assist
9 tackle breaks
2 offloads
1 forced drop-out
0 errors

This kid will be an out-and-out star.

So he'll probably sign with the Roosters.

I also don't think JD has lost the playing group.

Everyone loves the boss who lets them take it easy and knock off early.

We have a coach and squad who seem to prioritise being happy and having fun over working hard and winning.

Watch our games - there are 2 blokes each week you know have busted their guts, hate to lose, and left it all out on the field. One is our captain. The other is Taane Milne.

That's where we're at.

Yep things like pressuring the opposing kicker, and kick chase are effort/desire plays. Last night very few Souths players were doing that.

This is very true. Glad you’ve called out Milne - he’s a real goer, but unfortunately he’s pretty shit and about as dumb as they come, but jeez he puts in an effort - he’s one of those players who wants to win every single collision, and gets super cranky if he doesn’t. If Souths stars had his effort and commitment, they’ve be awesome. Latrell could learn a thing or 2 from Milne, but his ego won’t allow that!
