South Sydney Vs Leeds Rhinos in Florida

Leeds Rhinos will today announce an unlikely link-up with Russell Crowe after the Oscar-winning actor gave his enthusiastic backing to a partnership between the Yorkshire side and South Sydney, the Australian club he took over last year. This will include a joint pre-season training camp in the United States this winter, regular exchanges of off-field staff and possibly players - and every chance of Crowe making an appearance at Headingley later this summer when he is in England to shoot a Robin Hood film in which he will reportedly play the Sheriff of Nottingham.

"Russell and his co-owner, Peter Holmes à Court, are very keen on promoting the South Sydney brand across the world and this is another step along the way," said Shane Richardson, the Souths' chief executive who previously worked at Hull and Gateshead Thunder. "People in England probably don't realise what a huge fan he is of rugby league in general as well as South Sydney in particular and, as his wife's family are from Nether Poppleton [near York], he's delighted to align himself with a club from Yorkshire.

"Both clubs are excited about the benefits we're going to get from working together, in terms of on- and off-field expertise and merchandising as well as the possibility of both senior and junior players getting experience on the other side of the world.
"The American training camp is an added bonus.

Leeds have been out to Jacksonville in January before and said the weather and facilities were excellent and whether we go to Florida or another state campus we'll be looking to put a match on which with Russell's involvement must have a good chance of grabbing some attention out there."
The Leeds chief executive, Gary Hetherington, added: "This is a first in rugby league and an exciting and innovative development for both clubs. We each have a proud history and this is a new way to take our clubs forward in the global market."

Sounds awesome.

I dread to think where we'd be if Piggins and his cronies stayed in power.

Fantastic news.
I hope a tri-series with the Tomahawks is a possibility still.

The American 'spring camp' concept is a good one and Jacksonville could be the home of many sides doing preseason training in the future. The English sides in particular would benefit from getting away from their dreadful weather in pre season training.

I remember Hull and Parra "linking up" in the eighties and buggerall ever happened.

Didn't sterlo play a cc final for Hull?

Good news anyway, would be great to involve the AMNRL in some respect

JB Cup... playing alongside Cabramatta and Windsor

That is the reality and I'm not being facetious. We would not be in the NRL, there can be no argument about that.

Anyway, this is exciting news. I hope both clubs make the most of it.

one for the amnrl lads...

http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/02072007/4/rhinos-agree-south-sydney-exchange-deal.html

Leeds Rhinos have agreed a player exchange deal with Australian NRL side South Sydney.
The deal with Souths, who are part-owned by Hollywood film star Russell Crowe, also includes a pre-season game between the sides in Florida next year.

South Sydney chief executive Shane Richardson, who occupied similar roles with Gateshead and Hull in the past, has agreed with his Rhinos counterpart Gary Hetherington to stage a joint training camp.

Wouldn't it be great to see both clubs give one or two young Americans a go in their training camps and a trial run.
It would sell tickets as well as help the game in America and maybe produce a few potential players for the teams.
I'm sure one 20 year old could be found for each club who would be prepared to put in a few months training with the big boys.

Yeah, Sterlo played for Hull in 1984 and came back the following year and played in the 1985 CC final with John Muggleton against a Brett Kenny inspired Wigan. The link came about after Sterlo had already played for Hull but nothing ever came of it.

Sweet!.
Maybe this is a hint. I have been wondering which NRL team to support. I guess if the Souths come to sunny Florida...Then I have my team.

And a great opportunity for the AMNRl. and Jacksonville.

Seriously, is Jax becoming the RL capital on this side of the pond? Grand Final...Jamacian National's visit, possible pro training camp. ( I wonder if The Jaguars and NRL Teams would be interested in checking out each other training regimen..lots of possibilties)

I guess its only natural. everybody know that the toughest football is played down south.

I hope that (if possible) Souths' AMNRL team partner, the Philidelphia Fight, somehow get involved, if not as part of the longterm partnership (Which would be wonderful), but as part of the event. :)

To All. I have now sent e-mails to Shane Richardson and I am looking for one for a Leeds contact. I have had some contact with the JEDC, UNF, some of our sponsors, our hotels and some social venues. At this point if the teams agree to come and would like the Jacksonville Axemen to help set up this tour we are ready to get this done. We would love the opportunity to get two or three of our young guys there and I had word yesterday that Apple Pope has been cleared to start training after his injury. I would also like the opportunity to shadow the Souths coach for the time they are here in a effort to make the transition to a full time coach in the near future.
The Jacksonville Axemen are ready to make this happen and we would like to offer any support and leg work that is needed.

Your Leeds contact would probably be Gary Hetherington who is their CEO. He's not usually bad when it comes to spreading the word. he was the driving force behind the original Sheffield Eagles and would know what it's like to build a club from the ground up.

Spinner, if you don't get contacts/response let me know and I will put you in touch with a mate, Caro Wild at the RFL in the UK. Another mate is high up with Wales RL if that is of interest. Maybe be the Crusaders could go over? Bazza Randall.

This all sounds fantastic...I'm not a Souths fan, I'm a Dragons fanatic, but they have won my respect well and truly if this gets off the ground.
The opportunities here are endless for Rugby League if this should in fact happen and work.

Great initative by both clubs...fantastic news.
