Definately, for all we know it was founded after the Super League Grand Final, after peace talks with the ARL, News Ltd knew the Reds were costing them $$$ and with the Knights in the competition there was no need for the Mariners.
And the Melbourne Storm were born.
I have most Super League publications from 1997 and there is no mention at all of the Melbourne Storm in them.
I’m sure if I dig through all of my 1997 Rugby League Weeks nothing will be found in them either.

Perth been out of the nrl for longer so using that argument ….

Different context though - Sydney has a plethora of NRL teams that a fan can choose to support/attend. Perth had ONE.

Held you back ?, as was mentioned in earlier posts no expansion team has been gifted as the Storm were from day dot.
Fold the Reds grab Rodney Rowe, Robbie Kearns, Matt Geyer, Fold the Mariners grab Scott Hill, Brett Kimmorley, Robbie Ross, Paul Marquet, grab Tawera Nikau, Stephen Kearney, Glenn Lararus.
News Ltd backing, propped up tear after year after year.
Then came the salary cap scandal.
Maybe that’s what held you guys back, trying to keep an unfair advantage over the rest of the competition.

Would I continue watching RL? yes
Would I of eventually moved on after 25 YEARS, especially if the city I lived in had 9 other clubs? yes
Would I jump ship and follow the swans like WB? nope
