And in a further boost for the code on the eve of the season, St George Illawarra five-eighth Jamie Soward has extended his current deal with the Dragons until the end of 2013.
Soward, who like Mortimer was off contract at the end of this season, has signed a new three-year deal, giving the NRL the gift of two key playmakers showing loyalty to their clubs.

Soward, who debuted for the Roosters but has established himself with the Dragons under coach Wayne Bennett, said he never considered signing anywhere else.

:D :D :D

Effectively a two year deal, he wouldn't have come cheap to sign such a short deal but thankfully it gives us some much needed stability in the halves for Henry or Stanley to come through.

Congrats Sowie!

How much do you guys reckon he is getting paid? Do you think he would be one of our highest paid players now?

$290k+ I'd guess, his salary would only be rivalled by Creagh, Cooper and Hornby.

I wouldn't think so, given we offered Poore $275K apparently.
I know they are different positions, but Poore had played Origin, Soward hasn't gone above 1st grade yet.
Bennett showed last year he wont pay overs for players.

$250K Max I would assume....maybe closer to the $200K mark....who knows.

A half and front rower is an apples and oranges comparison. No chance in hell would he have not tested his worth on the open market if we offered 250k or below.

$400k for Campese is overs. $320k for Anasta is overs. $250k for Mortimer is overs. Less than $300k for the best 5/8 in the NRL last year is I guess a judgement where peoples views are going to fluctuate.

His manager is Sam Ayoub, I don't think there is any manager that is more ruthless when it comes to contract negotiations with star players.

In all reality, Soward has had one solid season in 1st grade.
He really was not in a position to be commanding anywhere near the $300K mark.
I'd be very surprised if Bennett allowed the club to pay that much for him.
Hypothetical anyway, we'll never know.

Bennett has also said that Front Rowers are usually among his lowest paid positions, while the halves obviously the most. (This was mentioned in one of his books)

So im sure Soward got a decent pay packet.
