I was looking forward to seeing this film after the directors previous successful efforts. But, unfortunately this is his worst effort. Shyamalan's films have got progressively worse since his breakthrough success with "The Sixth Sense". Here are my thoughts on his movies.
1. The Sixth Sense = Classic.
2. Unbreakable = Very good, but not classic.
3. Signs = Good, but below his other efforts.
4. The Village = Well below Shyamalan's standard.
The movie has some very jumpy moments. Normally, I would classify that as a good movie, but "The Village" is missing something. Unfortunately, it has a lot more corny than jumpy moments. There was a quick scene right at the beginning which made the cinema erupt with laughter, and I'm not talking about Adrien Brody's silly laughter either. People who have seen the movie know what I mean.
NONE of the performances impressed me at all. This is mostly due to bad writing on the directors part. Phoenix showed nothing, Hurt was bland, Brody was stupid and there were scenes where Bryce Dallas Howard forgot she was blind. If you want to see a great performance of a blind character, see Pacino in "Scent of a Woman".
It seems that Shyamalan relies too much on a twist to make the movie. Unlike Chris, I did'nt predict any of the twists in this one. It will be interesting to conduct a poll on which twists people did predict in his earlier films. I'll conduct that later. BTW Chris, I'll have to have a chat with you to see which ones you guessed. I can't discuss the meaning of the twists here, as I'll spoil the movie for people wanting to see it. On the other hand, I could be saving some potential viewers some money
.
Shayamalan tries to be philosophical with this one. His message is great, just not carried out well. The movie should have been far better than what it turned out to be.
