Given the two decisions in the Bulldogs-Souths game, and now Foran's try in the Sea Eagles-Cowboys game... What the hell is the obstruction rule this year (or week)?

The one incidence where no player was obstructed was penalised over-ruling the referees on-field call, and the other two which did impede players were called tries...

I'm really confused...

Since Greenberg took control, the refs and results have almost as much credibility as he had with the Barba "alleged coverup" last year

It all depends on who is playing.... Refs are scared of Toovey!

complete bullshit.

We complain about the refs every year, but that decision was f**ked. we need that "lock down" box where all decisions are shown in isolation.

I don't think the refs have ever been on the same page with regards to the obstruction rule. It's probably the most inconsistent ruling in the game.

Because manly were supposed to win. That's how they got it wrong.

Everybody knows the cowboys don't win in NSW, no matter what.

At the start of last year Daniel Anderson had the rule (or should i say "interpretation") right. Any time a player was impeded it was a penalty. But people (ie coaches) pissed and moaned and they changed it.

Apart from giving consistency, this had the added bonus of forcing teams to try moves other than the "block" play. God it's dull watching the same play from every team.

Foran's try was a super obvious obstruction. I don't understand how they got that one wrong.

The refs rule on wether they think the defender impeded would of had an impact on the try. In this case obviously there was obstruction but they have ruled it didn't make any difference.

A player ran through the line.& stopped in front of a defender(The rule states implicitly that a runner must CONTINUE through without stopping & impeding a defender).
Ray Ray was blocked ,attacking player ran into the hole & by the time RT got there it was too late..

Penalty for sure .

I think we can all agree when it comes to refs decisions throughout this whole year so far, we all have this similar reaction

How good is the obstruction rule? Sometimes it feels like they're trying to judge it on common sense yet other times their decision seems to be based on the letter of the law. Then they get it wrong both ways

Clear cut as written in the rules.
Filter it through the refs interpretation and we get muddy as shit.
How a video ref can decide so subjectively is a major issue, not with the rule as it is written, but in the process and people administering the rules.
How hard can it be?
We ask the players to follow the rules, why can't the referees?

Well usually it's because you play like busteds. Two games against Manly stand out like sore thumbs as glaring exceptions: tonight's game and the 2012 final. I'm sure you Cows fans can point to others. Oh yeah, and something or other about a 7th tackle. ;-)

when the channel 9 commentary team give a no try against a Sydney team straight away it gives you an idea of how blatant it really was. Gone from the occasional howlers to deciding results every round now but hay, if the didn't continually destroy games then they wouldn't get as much attention would they
