First look: Outside Backs

With the NRL season fast approaching, we take a look at the Sharks squad and the positional options for coach Craig Fitzgibbon and his team in 2022. Today we check out the Sharks outside backs

So the only real question mark in the backline is Katoa v Ikuvalu.

I’m a little dissapointed in this and I’m not sure why. Exciting for Tracey but I don’t see him as a centre.

Centre is the only position that we're a bit dusty in. We have a few guys that could play there at a pinch but only one specialist centre. I have faith in Fitz to make the best out of what we've got but I don't think Ikavalu has come here to play for the Jets. Whether that means he makes a centre out of Ronnie or not I don't know.

Tracey is not a centre's quoit.

I can't remember the game, but towards the end of last season he was starting there and I couldn't help notice the number of times he was given the ball with room to move, in good attacking position, and just couldn't offer anything other than running hard at the line. Just a hint of footwork or evasive skills would have seen opportunities created for others around him, but he seems incapable of doing it. Instead he is just easy pickings for the defense.

For mine, his strength is in his tough carries out of the back end. And that can be done from the wing. To play him in the centres just because we're not sure where he fits is, to me, detrimental to the development of others who have shown skill in that position, albeit not at NRL level.

I honestly don't know where he fits into the team.

Definitely light on in the "threequaters" to use an old term. Hard to discern what the Funky Gibbon will do in the forwards more than the backs for Rnd 1. Tracey and Ramien - Lock it in.

I don't think it's out of the question that Tracey could be made a centre....poor merkin must be hanging to play in one specialist position. I think he thought that his spot was going to be fullback until WK smashed it out of the park. The advantage of having him in a permanent position in the 13 is you don't need a utility on the bench. Might allow for Teig Wilton or Talakiller or Royce to get a spot that they otherwise wouldn't have.

Braydon Trindall feels equipped to take charge of a new-look Cronulla team alongside Nicho Hynes having benefited from an extended run in first grade last season.
With star recruit Hynes guaranteed a halves spot, Trindall and veteran Matt Moylan are seemingly competing to partner the former Melbourne playmaker under new coach Craig Fitzgibbon.
While Trindall has only played 23 NRL matches - including 10 straight in the halves to finish 2021 - the 22-year-old makes no secret of his desire to establish himself as a starter.

"One hundred per cent. After last year and getting those games in, I've moved into this year pretty confident," Trindall told AAP.
"I'm just putting my best foot forward at training and I guess we'll have to see what Fitzy decides. Last year I got 18 games throughout the year and most of them were starting.
"The boys that I played with gave me a lot of confidence as a young half to really be able to step up and play that role now. I think it really developed my game."
Trindall said the Sharks had been "chopping and changing" positions so far in the pre-season but he's already begun to form a combination with Hynes.
"He's a really good player and he's really upbeat with everything he does," he said of the newcomer.
"I'm learning a few things off him and working with him. It's been going pretty well."
If he doesn't get the number six or seven jersey against the Raiders in round one, Trindall would happily play off the bench at dummy-half or lock and bide his time.
Fitzgibbon put faith in Trindall before he'd officially picked up the clipboard at Cronulla, signing the youngster until the end of 2024 in June and allowing the experienced Shaun Johnson to move on.

Moylan, meanwhile, was given a one-year extension to find fitness and form.
"Knowing that I'm part of his plans for the future was a big relief for me. I can just focus on my footy now, I feel at home at this club," Trindall said.
"It felt good knowing that he was backing me."
As Fitzgibbon preaches the importance of thorough preparation, big-name recruits Cameron McInnes (St George Illawarra) and Dale Finucane (Melbourne) are unsurprisingly leading by example.
"When it's not even full-on at training, they still do it full-on," Trindall said.
"It's crazy how hard they train and it's just the people they are. They take it from training and put it on the field. It's really upped the standards of the club.
"Everyone's giving it back to them and having a crack at training."

Fair to say expectations have been lifted across the board.... Good positivity from the kid. Maybe Tracey does play centre and Tricky off the bench until the inevitable happens with Moyza's hammies? Nice problem to have tbh.
