How does a mutual option work, both sides have to agree to the option, or just one side?

By pure definition, a mutual option is where both parties have to agree. So really that would be a claytons option, because if the club or the player were not interested, it would not happen. Even if the option fixed the price, it may need to be varied to get the deal over the line.

The Hodgo deal is what would be known as a Put and Call Option. The Put party is the player at one price and the Call party is the club. So if the club fails to exercise their call option by a certain date (assume at the higher price), then the player (put option) has a window to exercise his option at the lower price - or he may choose not to.
