Unlike a player PO or club option CO, where only one party has the right to decide on the extension, a mutual option MO requires both parties to agree on continuing the relationship. If either side declines the option, the contract ends.

Hmmm, I'm getting closer to being persuaded.

But to talk in Pou's language, where would MO "provisions" of this sort sit on the continuum between a top of the contract range CO (which the club can not take up) and a lower range PO (which the player can take up), given that POs apparently save us money off the annual contract amount.

Do MO "provisions" save us money or lose money... and what is the point of even having them rather than a straight CO if the club wants? (POs can get f**ked, afaic.)

Tom Hazelton and Oregon Kaufusi are the other two forwards very much in the mix. Kaufusi has a mutual option, however if the club chooses to walk away it kind of defeats the "mutual" part of the option.

Kaufusi was brought to the club with big expectations. To be truthful he failed to live up to the impressive form he enjoyed while at the Eels.

It doesn’t make a difference to me whether an NRL mutual option works as described by Josh Hodgson or by various media departments. But only one of them makes sense. As stated in the link above, “if the club chooses to walk away it kind of defeats the "mutual" part of the option”. Likewise if the player isn’t interested. In that case it’s no different to any other off contract player.
