JUSTIN Langer has named Aaron Finch in his first Test squad as Australia coach, and the 31-year-old was not the only surprise selection in the 15-man group.

Finch will be joined for the two-Test series against Pakistan by fellow Victorian Peter Siddle, however his state teammates Glenn Maxwell, Peter Handscomb and Chris Tremain all missed out on selection.

Finch is one of five uncapped players in the squad, alongside quicks Brendan Doggett and Michael Neser, and batsmen Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne.

Finch dominated England’s T20 Blast (589 at 147.25) and has averaged 52.65 in one-day international cricket since the start of 2017. However, his first-class average sits at a modest 36.15 and he was not among the standout batsmen in last summer’s Sheffield Shield season (404 at 35.28). Nevertheless, Ricky Ponting is backing him to succeed in the five-day format.

“His four-day cricket for Victoria has probably been better than anyone else in the country, probably apart from (Matthew) Renshaw,” Ponting told cricket.com.au.

Like Finch, Siddle’s selection comes off the back of a bumper stint in England. The 33-year-old took 37 wickets at 16.40 runs apiece for division one county side Essex. With Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins both ruled out of the tour of the United Arab Emirates, Siddle will be looking to play his first Test since November 2016.

He will be vying for selection against Queensland’s Michael Neser and Brendan Doggett, who beat Tremain to selection in the squad. Given no man has taken more wickets over the past two Sheffield Shield seasons than Tremain (93 at 20.12), the right-armer can feel hard done by.

Left-arm finger-spinners Jon Holland and Ashton Agar will be fighting it out to be named Australia’s second-spinner alongside Nathan Lyon on the dusty tracks of the UAE.

Handscomb’s ommission comes after a lean tour of India with the A team — he averaged 4.00 across five innings before the squad was announced — while neither Maxwell nor imcumbent Test opener Joe Burns got the chance to mount a case for selection in the subcontinent. Burns was ruled out of a stint with county side Glamaorgan in August due to a back injury but was hoping to be fit in time for the Pakistan Tests.

In their absensce, both Head and Labuschagne impressed. The South Australian helped himself to a List A ton at the start of the tour before notching half-centuries in both four-dayers, while Labuschange scored two fifties.

Usman Khawaja and Mitchell Marsh each ensured their selections with first-class tons for Australia A.

TEST SQUAD

Tim Paine (c), Ashton Agar, Brendan Doggett, Aaron Finch, Travis Head, Jon Holland, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Michael Neser, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Starc

Renshaw is also in the squad, just not named in the article for some reason.

So:

Finch
Renshaw
Khawaja
S Marsh
Head
M Marsh
Paine
Agar
Starc
Siddle
Lyon

Oh boy.

What has Joe Burns done, and who has he done it to.

He was flown to South Africa to replace Warner, got 40 odd against their red hot attack, and is immediately dropped.

I just don’t know how CA keeps finding these new depths to sink to with these selections.

I've got little hope for this series

Finch is just a limited overs flat track slogger. Siddle is nowhere near test standard anymore plus the other dopey selections.

Oh boy

I legit thought Siddle was dead, but... I actually like his selection.

Hear me out. He's done, he's cooked, his career is over essentially. So why not grind him into the dirt on pathetic flat wickets instead of continually doing it to our star fast men? I mean, that's not why they picked him, but it's certainly a reason to not hate the selection. We're boned over there anyway.

Honestly who knows with these morons. Finch is a weird selection but if he bats six it might not turn out terribly.

No Burns is a farce

Unless Burns and Maxwell have been injured I'm not sure how they can press for selection when not even in the Aus A side.
Whilst Burns isn't a future all time great, he's still a solid choice, and better than most. I'd say England would love to be able to pick him, but their Burns can't get a test gig either.

Finch has been in good ODI form, but I'm fairly certain he's not going to be seeing the same pitches and bowling attack he'll see in an ODI. Interesting experiment I suppose which is about what the Aus test team is at the moment - a work in progress experiment.

Actually the tour to the UAE against Pakistan is a good one to miss. Careers get ruined over there.

That side would get dusted by some of our mid 80’s teams, truly laughable.

The worst non selection is that if Tremain, honesty Brendan Dogshit and Shittle???

And Fatty Funch lol, I can’t wait to laugh at all the clueless dopes who have been pushing for his selection in test cricket for years even with his terrible first class stats.

So Siddle has a decent season on the soft County wickets and Punter uses that to justify his selection to bowl on flat dust bowls ?

yep, makes sense

we change coaches and selectors but nothing else changes, we are gonna get dusted in UAE

I dunno, I suppose I see a bit of merit in Siddle now that he's basically a medium pacer. You want someone who can bowl long spells with control on the subcontinent. I've always been a bit of an advocate for taking Trent Copeland on these tours to just block up an end.

Yep. And like I said, wreck the old bastard, not Starc.

It's not a good selection but it's not an atrocious one even if their reasoning is likely wrong

Chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns needs to explain how Chris Tremain did not make this side.
Career stats 32 First Class m., 114 wk @ 24. 2017/18- 10m. 51 wk @21. With Josh Hazlewood and Patrick Cummins out injured this would have been the perfect time to blood Tremain. Instead they resurrect the career of Peter Siddle and give an indigenous bowler in Brendon Doggett the nod. Compare both Siddle and Doggett 2017/18 stats to those of Tremain.
Siddle: 9m. 24w @39. Doggett: 7m 28w @ 27. Chalk and cheese.

Holy f**k and I thought we had issues.

That's Australia's worst test squad ever.

When Glenn Maxwell has been genuinely robbed of a spot you know you have trash to choose from.

I don’t think Doggett is to bad of a selection. Bowled quite well for Queensland’s shield winning team so there is some merit behind it.

Maxwell has been robbed of nothing. f**k him and his showpony attitude tbh. There have always been bigger issues than ability with Maxwell and there seemingly always will be

Joe Burns is the one that's been robbed. Again. Scapegoat after Hobart, dudded after being flown out of the middle of a shield final almost for a single Test match.
