State of Origin 2024

I know this is said often, but the Kiwis thump the best players from SOO 30 nil and origin is 'the pinnacle'. Drives me insane.
I think the 'give a shit' factor comes into it, as it also does with when the fixtures are. The Australian guys ultimately care more about Origin over rep footy, with the emotional investment that is in state v state. Also, Origin benefits from being mid-season, not at the end when guys are largely cooked, and want a break.

Test footy would go way better if it were in-season. I don't know how you'd do that, and the NRL aren't likely to be interested, anyway. But you're going to get a better Test footy product when it's during the season, there is a window created for it, etc.

I know I'm part of the problem, I didn't watch the Pacific Cup last year and I can't remember the last Test I watched (2017 v Tonga, I think). But in November (as the Pacific Cup final was) I am over footy, I'm into cricket. If they truly want to make Test footy the pinnacle - and I doubt it could ever happen - they'd need to bring it in while the season is in full swing.

Yep totally. And the ‘give a shit’ factor extends to the fans which makes Origin a commercial behemoth and even less incentive for the NRL to prioritise test footy.

Ultimately I think the only thing that would shift that mindset would be the Kiwis (or anyone else for that matter) consistently dominating the Roos over an extended period. But even then, it would take years if not decades.

Olakau’atu a 2 match ban for doing nothing more than trying to stop the melee, lol what a joke. Murray 2 matches as well, while 8 fines were handed out

I tend to only watch the highlights of SOO or like last night skip over to check the score with five to go.

The Kiwis are my favorite form of this sport, ahead of the Warriors and the rest of it.

The NRL season is to long.
Once at 20 teams it should be a 20 round comp (1 bye) play each other once, finals in Sept with an international series in October.
What's the point of Vegas if not to grow the international game?

Well, coming off the bench in my day, was an immediate sendoff. I.e. the reserve was out of the game and someone had to go off to drop to 12.

Coming from the stands, never happened except with crowd issues and is a criminal offence and could land you in jail or suspended from matches for life!

So I don't think its hard to understand at all. I heard DCE's telling Klein it was a sendoff for Murray. I actually agreed at the time. I thought he would be! Otherwise the game becomes a free for all.

Yea I gotta agree. Olakauatu wasn’t being aggressive but if there’s no deterrent, the next one jumping in from the sidelines may be more hot headed. I don’t mind the odd scrap on the field but if we end up with dugouts emptying like baseball it’d terrible.

Don't care who wins. Only interested in the spectical. It was a brilliant game. It had it all. Enjoyed it immensely.

Mitch Barnett is an absolute beast. But we already knew that.

Me too. I can't remember the last full game of origin I watched (it being on 9 and not Kayo contributes to that, if on Kayo I'd probably have it in the background but I don't have apps for the terrestrial channels).

I complained earlier in the thread about how even in this part of the forum Origin gets more discussion than Kiwis and we're not even in the bloody thing.

I love the Kiwis like you and Sup.

Origin is a cancer of the international game but last night game was pretty good watch.

I never turned away from my screen. It was as good as it could get.
