state of Rugby League (GB)

True about the Aus vs GB competition. :D I think its because we take similar sports seriously. I'd say it was two all, we are better at Football and Rugby Union, you have Cricket and Rugby League. Makes the matches better.

We cannot cut the amount of teams, its like merging half of the Sydney teams!! The talent is coming through.

I don't want a competitive international scene, i want us to beat the Aussies every single time in everything!!!!

I wouldn't think of merging any sides just make the best in the super league and then relegate the others to make a stronger 2nd division.

In saying this I would never believe it is going to happen as so many clubs have too much to lose. My comments are designed to encourage debate and see what can be done to make GB a better international side.

I am not worried about football or RU. I only care about RL & the cricket so as far as I am concerned we are up 2-0. :p

Have a great weekend and hope your side gets up

Problem with only 8 teams is that there are not enough games. That is only 7 home games a year, so clubs won't make enough money to suvive. Things are in place now to improve the international scene. It is the main goal of the RFL up here. The domestic game is doing alright. Soon i think there will be more Englishmen in NRL. Ellis is proving a success and there are a few others like him around.

I don't care about cricket or Union so i'm thinking one all. :D

My side are playing Saints this weekend. Biggest match of the season, and one we always lose!! :( Still this year could be our year!! :)

But wait up didn't the english rl ban all australians playing there in the 1970 or 80's. I am sure this was the case as it was designed to stop the australian clubs pinching the best english players.

:)

There was a tug of war between Manly and Hull KR that led to the international ban. We thought the world was still the same as when the ban was put in place until the 1982 Kangaroos arrived and we received a harsh lesson that is still being felt today. Old, slow men were playing fast, strapping, skillful kids. The Aussies had taken their game on apace while we sat and fiddled during the time of the ban.

I disagree with some of that. I don't mean to compare apples and oranges, but I must. Football in England has been tagged with the same problem; "too many foreigners are why our national team keeps failing on the big stage". This ofcourse is not the reason why they're failing. The impact of foreigners (players and coaches) on the EPL has, almost definitely, improved the standard of the top English internationals, exposing them to different styles in tactics, approach etc and it has helped these players accomodate when playing world class opposition.

Great foreign players make local players better just by being around. And this supposed malaise in English football was the reason they were failing? Hmm, its taken an Italian manager for them to realize that you're supposed to make things a bit more professional, take risks with player selection, change things tactically, and understand opposition better. And England have gone from missing out on Euros in 2008, to becoming amongst the favourites for 2010.

The players hve to have the basics there in the first place or it doesn't matter who the ESL clubs sign and that is the problem. Kids are coming into the game and they simply haven't been coached in the basics to a high enough standard (generally). This also goes for soccer. Capello has hardly rung the changes because we don't have enough technically skillful players available to choose from (see above). We have the odd one or two but the rest are average with big engines because that's the way English soccer is played. Who makes England's soccer team one of the favourites for the 2010 WC? English bookmakers, that's who. What will happen is we'll struggle to qualify for the next round and lose the first game in the knockout stages. It's a dog eared script that England stick to rigidly.

Rubbish, we have some very good technical players and we get knocked out on penalties which is a lottery.

Coaching is improving, but using very famous players to bring in the youngsters has got to be good for the game. If Inglis, Hayne, Hodges etc. were English, they would not be playing rugby league.

Who are these great technical Englishmen? If they are so abundant then why do the EPL continue to ship in foreigners by the dozens every year? We ALWAYS lose on penalties :lol::lol: We are beating average opposition. Watch what happens when the REAL soccer nations come out to play. Sports coaching in this country is all about winning and not about learning HOW to play the game to a high degree of skill level. Look at the Dutch. Population of 20M (?) and they still churn out more highly skilled soccer players than a country of 60M can. Why is that? Because they learn how to master the skills of the game before being let loose in all or nothing game situations. You hang on to 1966 mate.

Believe it or not, some people around here want to actually have all the Sydney teams merge. Crazy
