Steve O'Keefe - When will he get his shot at test cricket?

Surely , surely he will be on the indian tour, and also play a big role in the ashes series?

The guy IMO is better than Lyon on all fronts, bowling, batting and fielding

But Glen Maxwell is a promising all rounder and Doherty has announced he's ready to play test cricket again.

Im not sure he's a better bowler than Lyon , pretty line ball IMO.

But given his other attributes I would have him there for sure.

Given all the other spinners we have tried its baffling he's never been given a go.

He's no hope, he doesn't average over 40 with the ball and he adds plenty with bat and in the field.

whether he is better than Lyon or not is irrelevant as to his getting picked

clearly Lyon will be first picked and its a battle for second and third is daylight, but we are talking logic here and this word is not known to our selectors

and thats the whole point, we just accept Lyon is our best.

We are so hell bent it seems picking someone who is inferior to Lyon (beer , maxwell, doherty etc...) that we are overlooking a bloke who needs a go, a decent go.

Lyon has good drift etc that O'Keefe doesnt quite have, he's a bit round arm, but his record is excellent and particularly on the crumbling and low bouncing wickets of India should get a game.

Lyon can't bowl teams out on 5th day wickets.

O'Keefe can.

That is the primary job of a spinner in Australia. Lyon is our #2 IMO.

I disagree, its the other way around. OKeefes round arm aid his drift into the right hander before spinning away. Lyons biggest flaw as an off spinner is his lack of drift, he has everything coming into the right hander and it makes him easier to play.

Lyon does (or did, recently he has changed) bowl with good flight and has good variation. He also bowls with a lot of over spin which is important in india (more so then side spin).

OKeefe is similar in the he bowls with a lot more over spin but like Herath and Ojha in that he attacks the stumps and gets a lot more lbw and bowled then Lyon gets batsmen caught more. In the subcontinent attacking the stumps is often the best way to bowl spins because it forces the batsmen to play and on dust bowls sometimes its easier to pad away at balls away from the stumps.

With Maxwell picking up 2 wickets last night, O'Keefe will drop even further down the pecking order.. Regardless if he picked up 8 wickets vs WA so far...

look like rain is gonna ruin the game between nsw v WA, also robbing SOK of a couple of cheap wickets and possible 10er for the game

currenty he has 78 shield wickets at 27.33, economy 2.59

what he does in unauthodox, what you're talking about is more swing than drift

leggies have the round arm action, offies should have the high arm action described as reaching up and pulling the blind down which causes them to pivot around on their non dominant foot and the ball will drift away naturally, assuming he is a right arm orthodox finger spinner

that said there is nothing wrong with unorthodox, generally its something that the good players of spin take some time to get used to and he could be a good foil for the more authodox Lyon

my main criticism of SOK is that he appears to be pencilled in as a spinner for the shorter versions of the game hence he bowls flatter and doesn't have the flight and drift that Lyon has but he can change that if he plays more 4/5 days games particularly in India

Some interesting points from Henry

Michael Beer would have taken a second spinner's role in India but his shoulder injury has opened the field. Xavier Doherty continues to impress in limited-overs matches but can that form be translated to Test cricket? Stephen O'Keefe, much ignored for two years since his all-round performance against England for Australia A, finds himself in contention. His opening-day success against Western Australia in the Shield game that began on Thursday was outstanding but no selector bothered to turn up.
Nathan Lyon will be the first spinner selected, for the opening Test in Chennai at least. Australia will most likely take two spinners into that match at Chepauk and the best performed will then earn first-picked status.

Given the selectors couldn't be bothered even going to the WA v NSW game would say he is out of contention.

Maxwell's well made 9 the other night would have him in good stead.

Test squad to be announced and yet no selectors are in attendance at one of the Shiled games where you would think performances matter while Maxwell will probably be picked on limited overs form and because Warnie says more Victorians should be picked

Think I should apply for a job as selector, all they ever seem to do is drink cocktails at the beach.
