Watson didn't bowl today and if he continues his form Ponting will be relaxant to use him. Smith for Hauritz would be the ideal way.

I haven't actually seen him bowl but I get the feeling he could go for quite a few if he plays.

Norths a decent bat and Smith is 3 years off being considered IMO. A decent amount of potential there but not really close yet. Keep him working with the great man instead.

So did the selectors, playing him as a number 8 in India. Now that was a f**king good decision.

Smith at 8 would be just as stupid. Smith and White are very similar players at this stage. Both are big hitters who can bowl a bit. If Smith wants to be considered a test spinner he has a LONG way to go. His First Class bowling average is 75 ffs.

4 for 13 off 4 overs should raise a few eye brows

What ever Warnie said to him the other day has certainly worked

I think Smith will play most of the ODI series this summer and he will play a test in England vs Pakistan in the middle of the year as the Aussies will be hoping he steps up for the Ashes next summer.

Agreed, why are people so obsessed with this bloke? Because he is blonde and can bowl some twirly legspin?

He is almost EXACTLY like Cameron White. A middle order batsman with a range of shots and plenty of power, who also by chance has a knack of picking up cheap wickets in limited overs matches when the batsmen try to score quick runs off him in the rush-hour overs. It is quite apparent however, that he struggles in FC cricket where he has to consistently challenge the batsmen over a long period.

Why on earth would you play someone like that as a specialist spinner? If he can't get into the team in the top 6, then he shouldn't be picked. Simple as that. Symonds was our spin-bowling allrounder at 6 before, in both formats. Now we have North for Tests, and White for ODI's. Unless Smith shows enough form over a couple of seasons to displace both of these players with his BATTING form, he shouldn't be picked.

If they are looking for a replacement for Nathan Horse-Sh*tz in the Test arena, we should definitely look at Krejza - he attacks, he gives the ball a huge rip, and can bat pretty well too. Hauritz or Doherty for the ODI team.

I think SMith looks to be a better batsman than White was at similar ages and has more potential with the ball. No way in hell he should be in the test side in the near future however.

Cam White could bowl for another 30 years and he will never have the flight and dip that Smith has from game one.
Smith bowls a lot of rubbish, but in amongst that he sends down unplayable balls that any leggie in history would be proud of. He just needs to get some accuracy and consistantcy and he is an improved version of Kerry Okeefe - actually, he's better than Kerry now, but a similar style.

Warne would still be playing club with you lot.

Time for young blood whilst we play the low ranked teams

White is a pie chucker, its an insult to even call him a spinner because last time I checked spinners actually spin the ball

Fine, he is a slow bowler who by the time he was the same age as Smith is now had taken 69 first class wickets @ 34 or after 9 matches he had 19 wickets @ 39

STEVEN SMITH has scored 305 runs off 196 balls without being dismissed in his past two grade innings.
In his latest batting assault, the 20-year-old smashed 134 not out for Sutherland against Mosman last Saturday to guide his side to a comprehensive victory.
Sutherland were chasing 201 in round seven of the first grade limited-overs competition and thanks to Smith's whirlwind innings, they achieved the target in the 22nd over to secure two bonus points.
Smith's innings lasted just 67 balls and he hit 15 fours and nine sixes. He and captain Matt Hughston put on an unbroken 197 for the second wicket in 82 minutes.
Towards the end, Smith hit a no-ball for four and the next ball was a free hit. He took guard batting left-handed against a left-arm spinner who darted the ball in to his pads and he smashed it over backward square leg for six.
