Suggest a name for the West Indies

The West Indies Rugby League Federation is currently looking at potential names for the representative side, and is asking for the fans of Rugby League to provide some suggestions. Similar to how the Australian national team is known as the Kangaroos and French side, the Chanticleers, the West Indies are after a name which can instantly be associated with the region.

WIRLF will collect all suggestions from League fans, no matter how weird or extreme they may be, and then from there a series of polls will be put forward to decide the best nick name for the team.

Canes- can be for both Sugar canes and Hurricanes

Buccaneers- pirates

Palms- because palm trees are traditionally associated with the Carribean

Wicketkeepers- because the only sport the West Indies play is cricket

The Calypso

I think there is an American sports team named the 'Jazz', so there is a precedent for naming the team after a type of music.

The meaning of Calypso is 'joyous song' and it comes from Trinidad and Tobago from around the turn of the century.

In the 50's the West Indian cricketers were described as Calypso cricketers, meaning they brought fun and excitment into the game, and I can't think of a better way to 'brand' a West Indies RL team.

For mine, it would have to be the Calypsos.

When most people think Calypso, they think of the West Indies region.

Maybe "the Reggaes" sounds better.

Actually the earlier idea is best - the Calypsos sounds fab.

Hope everything works out well for them. I reckon there would be some fast boys coming from that region.
