Super 7 final series

The AFL have had coaches playing a virtual reserve grade side in week 1, because there is no advantage/incentive to win. Someone will be able to help me out with which team it was, & why the scenario occured, because it wasn't long ago - but THAT is a farce.

Even with it's obvious failings (I watched in horror as the Dragons bowed out last year in Week 1) it's a system designed to make it;
a) More likely for #1 to play #2 in the GF (ie: the best play in the decider)
b) Statistically more difficult to proceed, the further down the ladder you finish.

The biggest problem with the system is the lack of footy that the minor premiers would play...

playing in a Grand Final after playing only 1 game in the three previous weeks? Ouch...

2nd can get eliminated first week? No thanks.

Should be more like this

Minor premiers get week 1 off

A - Team 2 v 3
B - Team 4 v 5
C - Team 6 v 7 Loser Eliminated

Week 2

D- Winner C v Loser B - Loser Eliminated
E- Loser A v Winner B - Loser Eliminated
F- Minor Premiers v Winner A

Week 3

G- Winner E v Loser F - Loser Eliminated
H- Winner F v Winner D - Loser Eliminated

Week 4 - Grand Final

I- Winner G v Winner H

I don't mind this system! Only 1 week off in the whole thing - seems to give everyone a shot - although game F seems a bit of a waste? They are just playing for positioning - maybe working that round a little differently so that the two lowest ranked losers get eliminated?

I just did that without remembering that it was actually the finals system that the ARL competition used in the split competition year of 1997. Manly beat the Knights in game F but yes, both sides were just playing for positioning. They both won the next week and met in the grand final of course (not that Manly fans need reminding 22-16 ring a bell!!??)

That was always the way it was when it was a top five system, and that system lasted about 20 years. It was funny how often the minor premiers used to lose their first semi after the week off. It happened in 1988 (Cronulla lost to Canterbury), 1989 (Souths lost to Balmain ), 1990 (Canberra lost to Penrith and 1993 (Canterbury lost to Broncos) in the early years of my supporting of the game.

Looks absoutly crap. You could finish anywhere from 2-7 and it wouldn't make much difference.

The Super 7 series only has one game some weekends. The NRL want to have as mnay finals as they can for revenue. But the NRL have said they're not going to change systems anyway because they're happy with how it's going, I agree the AFL, which was used in 95 and 96, should come back.

They can't put it back to an uneven number now. With the Gold Coast coming in you would have less then half the teams that could get in if it was down to 7.
