Since the discussion has become a bit fragmented over several threads, I thought I'd create one thread for our just before the game, during the game and post game analysis/discussion, like we had last year. (if thats ok with the mods)

Well, the day has finally arrived! The big one is almost here! My tip is the Eagles: although they're underdogs, I think they have a talent edge, are more well-rounded, and match up well against the Pats. Their time has come...Eagles 27, Patriots 17, with McNabb scoring 3 TDs to win mvp.

Enjoy watching the game everyone, this is the best day of the year to be an nfl fan!

New England's defence has been simply awesome. Rodney Harrison has been reading the play perfectly as only a veteran could and cNabb looks shakey. The offence hasn't had much of a chance to shine yet. Still 0 - 0 in the 1st quater. 30 seconds left.

7-0 Eagles!!

In the first quarter I thought the Pats were gonna run all over the Eagles.

To their credit though the Eagles kept composed and have come back to score first.

I think they may just go on with it too.....Tom Brady doesnt look to "into it".

Back soon!

Halftime now 7-7, so far it has shades of last year when there was a low scoring first half and an explosive second half of offence. Neither team seems to have any sort of momentum jsut yet. Its been a good game so far though!

Tom Brady doesnt look to "into it".

He seems to be getting into it a little now.

This is gonna go down to the wire....both defenses are tough, and its looks like this might come down to turnovers.

What a game!!

Brady is finding a bit of rhythm now good drive using Branch to throw to Vrabel for a touch down. 14 - 7.

Good game played by the Patriots weel done to them! The Eagles really made a mess of that drive with 55 seconds left, was thinking that they could have tied it up.

So who's everyone's pick for MVP?

IMO it's gotta be Brady or Branch, my personal pick is Brady. No picks and very few mistakes, as someone said on here he's the ultimate playoff QB of this era.

Great win by the Pats

What was Andy Reid thinking with the clock in the last five minutes? Very poor.

Owens did well, Dillon was the difference for mine, with the Pats controlling the second half on the ground and not going wacko in the air.

It will be interesting to see how both teams go next year - Philadelphia now having been to the SB and tasting defeat, the Patriots losing both Weis and Crenell for next season.

Branch won MVP, which is strange because i would have voted for Brady, but i suppose things even out because the first time he (Brady) won it i didn't think he deserved it, yet here i think he deserved it and didn't win it.

Back later with more detailed thoughts on the game.

Missed the game unfortunately, had to work.

I was at Super Bowl XXVI in '92, amazing experience under the MetroDome in Minneapolis. One of my most prized posessions is the ticket studs from that day (below).

The game could go for 10 hours and still not be half as boring as your pathetic waste of bandwidth posts, you idiot.

Great game, another SB ring for Brady and his merry man. The Pats are officially now one of the GREATEST teams of ALL TIME and Tom Brady's aura of invincibility come playoff time is still intact.

- Special mention to T.O. who played awesome for his first game back in weeks in the biggest game of the year...

- Rodney Harrison was a catalyst today for NEW ENGLAND and I find it a little puzzling to not see his name mentioned as a possible MVP for this game. He had what, 2 picks, a sick and was simply all over the field...awesome game from this veteran who lost his 2 CB's this season as well as his safety in Wilson in this game.

- Freddie Mitchell, I hope you learnt a valuable lesson. Running your mouth for 2 weeks, your gonna do this, Harrison ain't that blah blah blah...where is your ring? Where were you? A 3rd WR should not be trying to imitate a modern day great (Owens) talking smack to a now 2 time SB winning DB. I am sure you know your place right now...

Congrats to the Pats, the title remains in the AFC (hell, I am Fins fan and I have to take some solace from a p### poor season  ). Round of applause to the NE coaching staff who after today part ways...the OC is off to Notre Dame and the DC is now the HC in Cleveland.

After disposing of that drongo, some more detailed thoughts on the game, as promised, in somewhat random order:

* I thought NE did a real good job on screen passes in the game, which was a way I thought they could do well before the game against the aggressive philadelphia defense.

* The first half was real mish-mash, not as bad a standard of play Joe Buck said it was, but a mixture of some good play, effective D, and missed opportunities (particularly with NE getting no points off those 2 D-Mac picks). The standard of play definitely lifted in the 2nd half though, NE's first drive was aboslutely outstanding and really set the tone for them for the 2nd half, Charlie Weis did a real good job on that drive of putting Branch in the slot, which suits him because of his size and abilities, and that created matchup problems which NE exploited beautifully. And what about Mike Vrabel? A TD catch in 2 straight SBs? Most LBs wouldn't even dare to dream of that!

* Lito Sheppard got beaten like a bongo drum on the Pats’ first Td, didn’t he? :D

* NE had the better running game, the game they had with the running game was sort of a microcosm of the way they've used it all year...not really hammering Corey Dillon- a well-rounded, very good back- with huge amounts of carries, but using him efficiently. He got a big TD. And Kevin Faulk is a more versatile back these days, not just a third down player. If Philly got a good running game going, it would have been a much closer game. NE defended the run well, with the down linemen tying up blockers and giving second level players a chance to make the tackle for not many yards.

• NE's secondary did a pretty good job despite the success of T.O., Pinkston, other PHI receivers and McNabb's 3 TD passes. It doesn't really show numerically much of the time, but they make good plays and limit you. PHI picked on Randall Gay one on one, as they should have, but he made some damn good plays and Samuel I thought had a real good game. Harrison had a solid statistical game ( 7 tackles, 2 Ints) and is really good at reading QBs and breaking on the play, especially for a guy who isn't the most gifted natural athlete. I used to hate him in San Diego because of his dirty hits, but I've gained a lot of respect for him since he came to NE, and you can see from this game why they didn't blitz him as much this year. Interesting see what happened after Eugene Wilson’s injury…Dexter Reid turned the wrong way on the Greg Lewis TD, maybe if Wilson was there, he could have made a play on that ball.

• McNabb had more of an up and down game than a poor game, but I think he didn’t use his feet enough…there were a few plays where he stayed in the pocket when he would have been better served taking off. You can’t fault Brady’s game much, pretty solid and made a fair few really nice throws.

• Russ Hochstein vs Brian Dawkins on the Dillon TD play….poor Brian was just smothered…had no f**kin’ chance.

• Philly blitzed surprisingly consistently and probably a bit too much. Generally, the Pats O-line and Brady did a good job of picking it up and avoiding the sack, and generally the Pats o-line did better period, RT Brandon Gorin being the only one who had any real problems, being beaten badly by Burgess a couple of times. Light did a good job on Kearse, who I think they should have played more on the other side, his proper side, where he could have wreaked havoc against Gorin.

• On T.O., one can’t complain too much about the numbers he put up and he generally looked fine, but he lacked the TD so desperately needed I think.

• Geez, NE have a lot of guys able to make plays, don’t they? Colvin, Bruschi, Vrabel, Harrison, the list just goes on…

• Freddie Mitchell= 1 catch.

• NE established ascendancy pretty quickly in the second half…this is definitely a team that knows what it’s doing when it has the lead.

• PHI’s offense did indeed quite badly lack urgency on their 2nd last offensive possession. With 4 and 5 mins left they should have been in the hurry up, instead, they weren’t even in it with almost 2 mins left #-o #-o …I think they could have really cost themselves there, because with more time, who knows what they might have been able to make of that final drive?

• NE were better coached and their plays were better called overall here.

• My MVP feelings are expressed above, but nice numbers, Deion Branch…can’t really fault you for that game.

• McCartney’s halftime “hey Jude’ sendoff was great…overall, he was much better than last years obnoxiously fake, unentertaining garbage.

• Overall, this isn’t one of the all-time great super bowls, but a decent days entertainment nonetheless…congrats New England, definitely a dynasty and up there with one of the best teams ever to play the sport now.   Quite a moment when Belichick let his guard down the moment he knew the team had achieved its ultimate goal…and a nice group hug there with the departing Crennel and Weis. Ultimately, Phi probably didn’t deserve to end up only 3 short, 7 or 8 would have been more appropriate, they just weren’t quite good enough here. But NE certainly deserved to win.

Just finished watching the tape. Deion Branch, well deserved SB MVP. Another worthy candidate for mine is Rodney Harrison, but for some reason defensive guys rarely get it.

Full credit to TO. I never thought he'd go anywhere near as well as he did. Who knows what could have happened if he was 100% fit.

Gotta give credit to the Patriots, as much as I hate them they have to be admired. Even though some key members are now leaving their coaching staff it's hard to see who can really challenge them in the AFC next year.

For the Eagles, It really is a case of what could have been they left plenty of unmade plays on the field and the final 5 minutes was bizarre. It almost seemed like a lack of fitness with the cramps and how slow they were at the end game.

He is the Peoples Champion and he will develop into a fine WR one day. Give me him at 2 WR over Pinkston(who had a good game today tbh) any day. Freddie says most of the stuff he says for kicks for his team mates. I think he is great and he takes a lot of the focus off Phillys big guns. I'm sure Harrison was saving 'something for him' all game and this takes him off his game. It didn't work that well but still.

Harrison beat the Eagles today. I think Philly will represent the NFC again next season with smart moves in the off season(they have the cap room for another big name or two middle names).

McNabb and the Eagles now know what a superbowl and they'll be a much better side now they have won the NFC title game and got to the big dance.

Andy Reid did the right thing by not wasting a T.O on the TD drive in the 4th. You gotta save them up for when you are on D and you gotta back your star QBs arm.

Here is to hoping Philly sign a good 2nd WR or trade Pinkston and a late draft round pick for a WR with a big up side.
