I was not impressed with some of there players in the WCC and if they shine like they did last year then i may have to re-assess this debate.

Why? This debate is about the entertainment value of the leagues NOT the quality of the teams participating.

The debate changed from about the 4th post in!

NRL>>>>>>ESL or something.

As i said, it will be interesting to see how Manly go. To see whether its just the entertainment that better or maybe the quality isn't far off either.

It isn't fair to judge the NRL's quality based on Manly's WCC performance.

Even at the best of times the WCC isn't a reliable indicator of form but in this case Manly as a club barely resemble the premiers they were for a brief period in October. Sure on paper they were only missing a few names from that fateful day but without Hasler they were already a completely different outfit highlighted by their woeful effort against one of the lesser clubs in the NRL a fortnight beforehand.

With that said, the gulf between the two competitions is definitely shortening. The NRL may still be on top, but if the ESL can improve on their defensive plays, positioning and halves work they'd almost be on equal pegging.

The problem is the lack of competition in your competition. About 13 clubs in the NRL can lay claims to a potential premiership, the ESL has about half that...and the poor clubs REALLY suck.

Agreed. Thankfully there only seem to be two uncompetitive teams this year, as opposed to 8-9 a couple of seasons ago. It's taken a couple of years stabilising since relegation was removed but it's shaping up to be an absolutely excellent competition this year.

Also, you've picked probably the worst time to re-ignite this debate considering the match that Super League fans have just witnessed.

I strongly agree that the super league is more entertaining, the NRL has become a five tackle kick fest. One might proclaim its better, however, it's in the eye of the beholder.

Lastly, the atmosphere on Thursday night at Newcastle, was dead for large portions of the match, as the game was played out between the 30m lines for long periods.

13 teams???

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sp...rs-and-melbourne/story-e6frexnr-1226286645715

THE NRL captains have spoken - only four teams can win the NRL this year.

Many believe 2012 is one of the most wide-open competitions in years, but the skippers quickly narrowed the serious contenders down to the Warriors, Manly, Wests Tigers and Melbourne.

so they believe its only 4 teams that can win the NRL and who are we to argue with the captains??.......and theres only 4 teams that could win ESL - wigan, warrington, leeds & st helens.........and maybe catalan at a push...

Not at all.

Any Rugby League fan worth their salt would know that article isn't credible enough to base their argument on.

Always has to be some gullible sap who buys into it. Congratulations.

the captains, the players that play in the NRL every week...say that theres only 4 teams that can win it...and i'd rather believe what they say than you...lol

Yes, your argument is pretty laughable - one DT puff piece means it's impossible for anyone outside of those four teams to win it. Hope you told the Panthers and Tigers they were no chance in their respective years because the captains didn't rate them in March. Oh how could I forget the lol? The more you have the more correct you are on here...or something.

Try this on for size.

Since the NRL formed 9 different clubs have won a premiership.

Less than half have done the same in the ESL.

Which is essentially my point - the NRL is more and has always been more competitive than the ESL.

yet manly or melbourne have won 4 of the last 5 grand finals

and manly or melbourne have contested 5 of the last 6 finals including back to back finals against each other...

the depth the NRL used to have started to to disappear 5 or 6 years ago and the comp is starting to be dominated by a handful (4) of clubs, just like ESL, who will always come out on top......sure you'll get the odd bolter from the pack but it'll be a one season wonder..

Wow, three posts in a row and none of them hit the mark.

I hate to break this to you, but the Melbourne Storm didn't win anything in 2007 or 2009. They broke the very rule that keeps the competition competitive. So that point is null and void.

The captains don't disagree with me at all, they were simply asked the wrong question. They were each asked to pick one team to win the competition - not how many teams could potentially win the competition. I'd dare say if they were asked the relevant question to this topic, the answer would be higher than mine but as is, they selected the 4 best teams of last year with the exception of Brisbane. And I don't think I have to explain that one to you.
