Whinging? Don't let facts stand in the way of trying to bag the superior competition.

Once again, you know you're struggling when you have to validate your arguments with internet acronyms. Oh dear.

Brisbane Broncos, Canberra Raiders, Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, Gold Coast Titans, Manly Sea Eagles, Melbourne Storm, Newcastle Knights, North Queensland Cowboys, Parramatta Eels, St. George Illawarra Dragons, Sydney Roosters, Warriors & West Tigers.

Some clubs obviously have better chances than others, but not by too much. In fact, I've probably underrated Cronulla but just something about them just doesn't resonate with me.

If I was to post that in the NRL section of this forum, do you think most people would agree?

Or is their the slightest chance your talking bobbins?

With that specific list? Probably not, opinions are fairly varied and I've seen plenty of supporters tip clubs I didn't even expect to feature in September like Cronulla. Hell, the great Lockyer has the Penny Panthers in there. It's that split. I think those are 13 clubs who have a chance, however faint it is, to pull it off this season. It's early days, and that list will naturally dwindle but as it stands, there's nothing wrong with it.

And all in all, my point is, the NRL is more competitive than the ESL. I haven't seen any of you try and convince me otherwise.

ok, well the ESL is more competitive because any of the teams could win it.
I mean some of the teams chances are fairly faint and the list of teams that could win will be reduced into the season...

Nah, your talking bobbins.

The NRL is a good enough comp for people not to over hype it.

Roughy never said that would be the final four, he said one of them will win it.
To be fair, he has probably underrated Cronulla though.

There's a certain degree of ignorance on the side of the average NRL supporter IMO. Many just dismiss the ESL on account of the continued poor showing of the National team. This isn't helped by TV networks decision to not have any coverage of the ESL whatsoever. I imagine this tends to make a lot of fans a bit insular. For example, elsewhere on the forum, there was a thread entitled "Ellis to retire at the end of the season" and another claiming James Graham should be an early contender for "rookie of the year"

Wonder how many NRL fans have actually heard of the George Hotel?

C'mon you Poms can have better things to do than nit-pick at whether or not I believe 13 teams are competitive - a pretty stupid thing to do given the efforts of Parra in 2009 and Roosters in 2010 but I digress. Most of you agree that the NRL is more competitive and that's all the matters.

take the original bet ya big girl

I'm not interested in that bet and any taunt you're going to make isn't going to change my mind. You've listed sides that I believe will do worse than sides you've chosen to omit.

dp - You make some really good points and I believe this to be generally true. There is very little ESL coverage down here so fans generally base their opinions of the ESL on how England performs in the International tournaments or on player transfers. It doesn't help that one of our biggest media personalities, Gus Gould, openly critiques the standards of the ESL

I believe the likes of Ellis, Burgess and Graham are changing that perception & if the ESL can continue to grow it wouldn't surprise me to see the coverage expand down here.

From my POV - Still a big gulf between the top sides and the bottom sides but plenty of talented players in the ESL who would still be good players in the NRL. Players like Pat Richards or Joel Monaghan would be a god-send for a club like Cronulla & there are plenty of good Pommy players coming through, especially in the forwards.

That's enough from me, enjoy your own section.

Close SL games between top sides are great to watch - but far too many SL sides seem to wilt as soon as they let a try in - the blowout scores ought to be embarrassing for some teams. In contrast NRL sides are close enough in ability to keep most games relatively close even when top plays bottom.

IMO the top end of SL has improved a lot in the last couple of seasons. There are 4 genuine contenders for the title - Leeds, Sts, Wigan and Wire. Then there are a bunch of sides who can compete with them/beat them on a good day - Huddersfield, Hull * 2, Cats. After that the standard drops off alarmingly (although Salford are looking better than I thought). At the bottom end the teams aren't entertaining at all - they are simply dreadful.

I think we'll see this gap continue for a while yet, as some clubs still aren't producing enough homegrown players to replace the loss of good quality NRL players who simply aren't being signed any more.

Don't watch much SL but what I've seen certainly doesn't fit with that article. Yeah they might chance their arms more, but they don't have the talent to back up those gambles.
