The way the competition works nowadays, success is a bit of a poisened chalice. If you make finals a few years in a row or win a comp, you paint a target on your roster and all the other teams whittle away your good players.

Only a few coaches seem to have the knack of knowing who to hold and who to let go.

The sad part for the Storm is that Bellamy is one of those guys. If they hadn't have had all these back room contracts going on, I reckon Bellamy would have still held together a very good team regardless. As it is, that was taken out of his hands and now the whole place is tainted.

Not rubbish. Old and inconsistent, yes. Locked into a losing culture from past years, yes. In need of an overhaul, yes. But not rubbish.

Rubbish is St George. Or Parra. Or Wests Tigers.

To be fair I am really warming to Potter as a coach. He's had a ridiculous injury toll to deal with and a heap of young players getting blooded - and despite that the team is playing with more ticker than I'd have believed.

If they had dug in and had a go last year like they are now I really do think Wests Tigers would have made the finals.

Agree. Until every player and staff member that was there from 2005-2009 is gone the taint remains.

Mickey Arthur sacked within a few weeks of the ashes

f**king lols, we're a shambles

They really need to piss Sutherland and Invers off as well and start from scratch imo.

I said this in the thread about it in the cricket board but I really believe that they need to get Steve Waugh involved somewhere in the process. Personally I'd ask him to coach the side. Don't care if he has no experience. He is a hard bastard and if given free reign, he would run the necessary cleaners through the place.

We need someone who has a plan and would take no shit from anyone who got in the way of that plan

Drew: you'll need to replace me for F7s. I bloody forgot about it, and I'll be out all day today.

No worries. You'll be on the bench but only as a 'passenger'.

Potter is definitely the man they need. Its your administration, junior development and structures in place that are the issue.

The junior development is actually fairly good. Admin is a problem. Rehab, recruitment and conditioning is also not too flash. It's being addressed, take that as gospel.

Positive years ahead.

Must admit though. The Cambo game on Saturday with about 30 people turning up was discouraging to witness.

Thought I'd stumbled into the NRL section for a second.

You have... :sarcasm:

Not enough expert opinions

Actually watched a game of women's hockey on the weekend.

Was predictably rubbish. But the $3 tinnies counterbalanced that nicely

Disagree to an extent. I think its about planning for three to five years with juniors coming through and staggering your contracts properly so they don't all finish at the same time.

As you suggest, Melbourne know how to do it. So do Brisbane to an extent. Success breeds success and players stay loyal to the club if they're successful so wages won't balloon as a consequence.

Clubs should be releasing and bringing through at least two players a year so that the team isn't dependent on a core group so much.

Definitely agree on Merrin, should be back in the front row (although he's doing a good job where he is, he's a natural front rower, gets through the defense with a good offload to boot).

Dan Hunt is an example of why stats measuring metres gained are flawed. He makes alot of metres but he rarely puts any dent in the defence and he doesnt get his team over the advantage line. The value of a front rower is more about the metres they can gain once they hit the defensive line + play the ball speed, where players such as Woods and Scott excel (not to mention Tim Mannah, who really has been outstanding in a woeful Parramatta side).

Also Ricky Stuart is a dick. Stop coaching in such an ill disciplined way and you wont get such poor penalty counts against you. Darcy Lussick must be one of the worst buys of the season as well, just gives away penalty after penalty with stupid play. Agression still has to be disciplined if you want to get anywhere in the game - look at how Souths and Easts are playing at present.

Dan Hunt is softer than melted ice cream right now. Very frustrating player to watch. Similar case as Ryles, who had all the potential in the world yet is probably one of the most mediocre players I've ever seen.

Boy I'm glad we let Ryles go. The years where our fans lauded him as some sort of front rower supremo were dark years.

Can't agree with that at all. We get penalised out of games when we're doing nothing different to the opposition. No one is saying the penalties aren't deserved, just that it seems the referees are much happier to penalise the side coming last than the side coming first. Souths were holding down longer than we were in the ruck yesterday but we lost the count. Maybe we need a wrestling coach after all, maybe it's the subtlety that something like that brings to slowing down the ruck that we lack. Also Lussick had given away less penalties than Mannah last I looked, he's been solid. Probably needs to stop shoulder charging blokes or tackling them by the face but just because he gives away a couple of memorable penalties doesn't mean his discipline is any worse than anyone else in the side. Ben Smith, Reni Maitua and Jarryd Hayne have given away a lot more penalties for eg.

I also don't necessarily agree with people saying our squad is totally rubbish. It's certainly got a lot of rubbish in it, but there's still a lot of decent players and better in there and we've got some good signings so far for next year. The major problem is what we lack, not the overall squad quality. Hayne is obvious, as is Mannah. Both rep quality players. Sandow has a lot of baggers but it's a little unfair IMO. He's playing behind an atrocious backrow without a five-eighth or hooker to speak of in the side. He's not in the top tier of halfbacks but I for one hope we do keep him. We've seen what he can do in a good side, and it's too much to ask even the best halfback to drag a poor side around the field alone.

I think our three major problems this season are youth/inexperience, some shit holding us back and mostly a lack of decent players in important positions. We don't have a 6 or a 9. Joseph Paulo is useless at every position bar maybe impact off the bench, and Matt Keating has the second or third slowest service in the game. But I do think we're going the right way and will improve markedly next year. Really good young guys like Jacob Loko, Kelepi Tanginoa, Peni Terepo will have had this season under their belts, and I think Ricky is managing the young guys quite well and not exposing them to too much first grade and burning them out. Lesson learned from Cronulla I hope. We've got Hopoate, Norman, Hock and Mossop coming over in important positions for us. Personally I'm not sold on Hock because he's a thug, but he does make an impact. We've got a pretty good crop of juniors coming through as well in kids like Kaysa Pritchard, Vai Toutai, Pauli Pauli, Junior Paulo, Frazer Masinimua, Brayden Williame, Kenny Edwards and a few others. And most importantly Sticky is finally doing the sort of clean out Anderson tried to start. We're not automatically going to be minor premiers again, but we're moving in the right direction more than the Tigers and Dragons IMO anyway. This rough line up certainly isn't awful, although we need to sign a hooker....

1-Hayne 2-Sio 3-Morgan 4-Hopate 5-Loko 6-Norman 7-Sandow 8-Mannah 9-???? 10-Allgood 11-Mossop 12-Tanginoa 13-Hock -Bench-Pritchard Lussick Moi Moi Terepo

Souths are a protected species these days. Lots of piggy backs in their game against us a few weeks back. They offered nothing on their own, so needed a leg up.
