Here's a hypothetical....what can the NRL do if Parramatta refuse to pay the fine for Sticky's presser? That's not happening, FTR. I was just wondering what the NRL would do if Parra or any club in the same situation said "Nah, your refs were shit, get stuffed."

I'd assume the NRL would just strip the $15,000 from their funding that the NRL gives them as a grant/allowance?.

No idea. NRL should stop fining though. Plenty of people make the same claim that aren't coaches; fining the coach who had the balls to say it is simply denying the sun exists because you're locked in a dark room.

They'd just take it out of the grant they give that club for the following year.

So really, the fine is basically pointless...sure they might take it out of the grant but really, clubs can just tell them to f**k off..why bother?

More complicated than that. Between 92, 93, 96, 99, 2004-06 we should have shagged one. The fact we didn't is more the issue and why 2010 was so big a deal. Canterbury have been in what, 3 GF's since their last win in the 80's? Saints have been 4 and had three years where they should have nailed one under Brown.

Also, Saints 'holding to the heritage' is closer to Carlton's 'We are the history club'. The combination of the Red V, the 11, the names of Gasnier, Langlands, Raper, Provan etc - the identity of the club is wound up in the history itself. Its a big load to carry but one fans do with pride because when you pull on a jersey, they feel connected with the past due to the way the jersey has been maintained throughout the years.

Its why when they wear the 'red rag' they get upset.

And we perform like muppets.

Dress like Steelers, play like Steelers...

Imagine sticking your head in JA. I swear, you'd think it's a psychiatric rehabilitation centre in there. Some people get so emo and suicidal over the smallest things. Not to disregard Swoard but the backlash in there was laughable yet scary.

Perhaps you're right, but Bennett got Soward tackling which means its possible for anyone.

Fear of pain is easily fixed. Hurt them enough at training and they'll either learn to tackle front on or break - both options get you a result.

Regular ESL fans - has Dureau actually improved any in this regard?
Is the team coached to hide his deficiencies?
If he came back to the NRL would he be up to scratch, or languish at Mullen-like levels?

Not enough expert opinions

Actually the last few pages have all been interesting and well reasoned NRL discussion (and cricket androtropry). FFB 4lyf

Apart from the stupid penalties and stupid mistakes, Ryles has been really good for us.

It seems he has really helped out our younger props aswell.

Similar effect in 2010 at Easts.

Same with the merger / 16 arguments. Never Saints fans, always those butt hurt.

The only issue is the average Saints fan bites when in fact they should just continue on claiming the 16 and watching the gnashing of teeth.

Always

Ahhh the reason why so, so many Saints fans are arrogant shitstains.

Fair enough. To me thats complacency rather than arrogance, and I agree. CA have been useless for a long time. The development pathways for young cricketers aren't what they used to be and the selection policy is geared against youngsters IMO. I've always admired Englands approach to players like Cook and Swann, and more recently guys like Joe Root. They all started pretty slow and inconsistently but got (or are getting) extended runs at the top level and blossomed because of that. Compare that to our treatment of guys like Hughes and Khawaja and the like. How are they supposed to learn to play Test cricket in the Sheffield Shield? You don't get better unless you're tested, and that's something I think our selectors need to realise. And why do we insist on picking has beens over the future? How is a guy like Nic Maddinson going to reach Test level if we pick Chris Rogers instead? Where we used to take guys like him on tour, to train around the world with the top players, we now seem to expect failure and want some form of safety net in older players. Hell we didn't even have A tours for a while there. No surprise England have gone up and we've crashed out.
I sort of disagree. I think in years past the Shield was an excellent breeding ground for test cricket. The obsession with youth has seen some high quality first class cricketers moved on before their time - I think players such as Maddinson would learn more playing with Katich in the top order than Tim Cruickshank, for example.

It's happened at grade level as well, young players have gotten comfortable passages through each level because of their involvement in the NSW cricket system - Look at Mitchell Starc, did bugger all in grade cricket to warrant a first class debut, did bugger all in first class cricket to warrant a test debut, has done f**k all in test cricket and people want him starting at Trent Bridge.

So I think the biggest issue is that we've lost the balance at first grade and first class level, and thus are not progressing on an international stage. I agree that Hughes, Khawaja didnt get treated well in their initial runs, but neither have they earnt their spots back since, and I think that is telling. Khawaja still hasnt shown improvement in key areas - game awareness, looking to tick the strike over and not get bogged down, whilst Hughes still struggles with top class bowling. The only one that's been dropped in recent times and has truely gone back and improved their game is Steve Smith.

The Ashes isnt about player development, it's about winning, which is why Rogers has been chosen. To go with that he's done far more than the other options to earn his position.

Well I think the lack of class old stagers in Shield is also directly attributable to CA. For someone who's just retired it's a much better option to head over to the IPL and play a handful of shit easy T20s while earning half a million bucks than it is to stay and play a reasonably tough Shield season on peanuts. It's tough for the Hughes' and Khawajas to go back and improve when the general level of Shield cricket doesn't demand improvement. It's very tough to improve in an environment that doesn't require improvement. And I wasn't talking about developing players in the Ashes, but I don't see Rogers as a valid option so why not have a guy like Maddinson around training and touring with the side?

I'm not going to get drawn into an argument about Starc as I know most people don't rate him anywhere near as highly as I do. I will say that I think we're mad not to give him a run in England. I just think that a quick left armer who swings the ball in to a right handed bat is a huge advantage and a huge point of difference and we haven't got a good enough side not to try and squeeze out any advantage we can IMO.
