I'm not blaming Merritt but in all seriousness that edge gave up three tries. You can't give Boyd and Inglis that much room. Even with the flow of possession and penalties, hypothetically speaking we could have held on if not for that edge. Of course hypothetically Smith could have scored six barge over tries. The point is more that we gave QLD a massive weakness to exploit and they did it well enough. They also stuffed it a couple of times. But we can't give them that again

Problem is, put a competent defender in place of Merritt and "hypothetically" it's a different ball-game. Momentum. But after we defended 13 sets to 3 in the opening 20 there was no way we were going to win. They got some 50/50 calls their way to. In their credit, they cam out piping hot, capitalised on our weakness and did their job. Even off the series.

You could always keep Dugan at fullback and put Hayne on the wing, Idris in centres and JMoz to wing. They're two different options.

Uggghhhhh of course, Merritt bashing. Yes, he screwed up, and isnt playing great, the rest of the team ain't playin that great either, but of course he has to be the one that everyone focuses on.

He got targeted all night. The reason Merritt isn't found out so often in defence at Souths is he has good inside centres who know how he plays and compensate for his errors. JMoz simply isn't familiar enough with him to cover his deficiencies.

I also think he was on the wrong side; they picked two left wingers (IIRC Merritt's usual side).

The thing about players like Finch and Pearce is they give everyone enough reason to criticise them but then comes the days when your team's in real trouble and they pull of something magnificent, everyone will say it's a fluke, it's not it's the autistic relentless these guys display every week. Yeah they're not great halfbacks, but at least they always try hard.

Sure, they may try. No doubting that. But effort is not what we need - we need an actual halfback to steer the side. FFS, Farrah was doing a better HB job for the last 15 minutes of the game.

I know we got nailed in the forwards, so the halves are under the pump and working harder, but we surely must have a better option for HB than he.
