lol, the ole 'Ref's were in your favour' kick from a Storm fan. You remember this one, yeah?

People tried to match because we blew teams off the park up the middle.

Anyway, the point I was trying to make is the fundamentals of rugby league have been lost in the shine of athleticism and the attempt to turn the game into entertainment rather than maintain the core of the sport.

What? No, I wasn't referring to the refs, I was referring to the near solid wall of defense. It looked like you guys had more players on the field than normal because of how air tight that shit was. I always call them the 16 man dragons for that reason.

The last team I remember that won the title playing enjoyable footy was the Broncos in 2006. Loved their style. '08 Manly did alright too I guess.

Saints played a very, very similar style to the Bronco's of '06.

That style can be beaten, we just need the coaches to do it. Who would lead the charge amongst the current coaching staff? No one, they're all too hampered by needing results to try anything. Come in the bottom eight, and you're immediately under fire. No room for trying and failing, so copy the play that works, regardless of how crap your team is. Annoys me.

Agree. The demand for success has meant short term solutions for long term problems.

The style of Footy needed to do it is far too inconsistent to ever be attempted again on a regular basis.

Nowadays, if you are inconsistent as a football team, your coach is under the pump and chances are he will be gone at the first sign of a losing streak.

Yep, agree.

Ah, now I understand. I follow your thought.

I agree 110% about the negative impact valuing athleticism over footballing skill has had on the modern game. That and wrestling.

If you're a recruiter employed by a club and you need to come back to them with a list of names by a certain date it is a lot easier to find the really big really fast kids carving up everyone a foot shorter than them. Anybody can see those players. Most of them struggle when they get to the big leagues and everyone is fast and strong.

What is a lot harder, what takes more time and effort is finding the kid that physically looks like every other kid but can do things with the football that 99% of others can't. Think back not long ago when you had Fittler and Johns and Daley one one side and Lockyer and Langer on the other. That was great rugby league.

Too many poorly skilled athletes, and too many overcoached teams now.

Watching old games from 10-15 years ago makes me sad.

I remember the 2006 Broncos for grit and constantly keeping a super high level of attacking pressure, they made some huge comebacks and 2nd half blowouts that season.

I mainly remember 2010 Dragons for solid defense and high percentage attack. The Broncos has a lot more enterprise and a much more lethal backline in '06

Maguire. We are leading the comp by 4 points and premiership favourites, the status quo might win us premiership. We have scored the most points in the league. And Maguire is still looking at fundamentally changing our team to make us more dynamic in attack.

Sutton will be played at lock. We'll be having 5 playmakers on the field at once. One more creative player and one less run of the mill backrower on the field will hopefully lead to a more exciting and even more effective attack.

If it works hopefully it leads to more teams going in that direction.

But we hoped that in 2005 after Benji and the Tigers and all it led to was more overcoaching and more monotony to stop them.

Man I miss Darren Lockyer. What a magnificent player, he was the last of that era of playmaking Gods

I'm in the tiny minority, but I became a fan when the wrestle was fully in swing. I watch the old stuff now, never having known it so can't wax nostalgic over it, and am really not too impressed. I watch "classics" on fox sports, and the lack of discipline and dropped balls and missed tackles annoy me. I far prefer it as it is now, but I realise it is because it's what I'm used to.

I saw this really really really obese person the other day with tiny arms, doing the mental math I figured it would be impossible for said person to wipe their bottom. How would they get around this??

With a handle thing. It's like a coat hanger they wrap toilet paper around.
