Surely that's in part a volume and access thing.

Most are perfectly capable of drinking alcohol without getting drunk or causing problems.

Like smokers staring in from outside pubs in the rain whilst people shoot up

People would figure out how to do it. Pretty easily I suspect.

Anyway, I don't really think legalization of ElephantJuice is a smart move. They are dangerous, long term pot smoking does no one any good, I doubt pills/speed/coke are particularly good long term either, let alone the opiates. Just because We have certain harmful (in large, large doses) substances legal like alcohol and cigarettes doesn't mean legalisation of others is a great idea.

I like the idea of decriminalisation. Targetting drug users is just a good way to keep a robust prison population. The heavy sentences of people in the states, for example, just make it hard for these people to ever find decent employment etc once out of jail - and bang they fall into drug use again. Keeps a pretty cheap labour force but maintains a large socioeconomic problem.

Interesting watching the Len Bias 30for30 doco, lawmakers from that time saying the reaction to his death, which lead to 5 grams of crack carrying a hefty minimum sentence (far harsher than cocaine, the more expensive drug), were grave errors in judgement, that have not helped the problem at all.

But I do think suppliers and manufacturers should be penalised fairly heftily. The links of the drug trade to several other horrendous areas of crime can't be ignored.

Alcohol in and of itself is not a problem - I don't drink, personally, but I don't have anything against people that do, and I know 99% of drinkers do the right thing.

However, that 1% is a big, big problem - they cause havoc, get violent, kill or maim people when they get behind the wheel of a car...And all the while, we laugh it off as "Aussie larrikin behaviour".

Nothing wrong with enjoying a few drinks, but we need to change our perception of alcohol IMO. It's a dangerous substance when used incorrectly.

Anyone who sticks a needle in their arm deserves what will become of their life

Well, that's a very simplistic and clinical way of observing it.

Generally speaking, most junkies get into it because of underlying problems - a poor house life, which leads to bad friends, which leads to crime and ElephantJuice, and so forth.

Now, I am all for holding people accountable for their actions, and junkies are no different. But if someone gets to a point where they feel the only way to get through their day is through ElephantJuice, then clearly there is something deeply wrong, and I am not sure giving people the cold shoulder treatment is the best way to go.

I used to think the same way, until someone asked me to consider a simple problem. I am as anti-ElephantJuice as you are, mate, but the dilemma posed for me was as follows: simply imagine what you would do and feel if your kid fell into hardcore ElephantJuice. Would you disown them? Kick them out of home? Hate them?

Initially, I took the tough love approach and said "yes" to all three questions.

But deeper thought showed that that was an emotional response to a loved one falling into a pit I despise. I realised I could never, ever disown MY kids, or kick them out. I would be heartbroken that they went down that path, but I would do anything - anything - to help them out.

I realise when we're dealing with random people we don't know personally that it's a different situation, but I believe the general principles of compassion and empathy should still be observed.

No drug would be a problem if everyone knew how to exercise a little bit of self control. Sadly, there is a small minority that let the whole team down.

That's exactly it, mate.

My two best mates don't drink regularly, but when they do, they get destroyed. But the only times we ever got in trouble while out were:

(1) they were so drunk at the casino, they were trying to high-five the dealer, despite the dealer not being allowed to do so [the cameras could see it and misconstrue it as something dodgy], and the dealer called security and almost had us escorted out; and

(2) one friend was so smashed he got off the night rider bus, vomited, and we weren't allowed back on because he had just spewed.

They clearly drank too much, but they were still able to keep their inhibitions in check and distinguish right from wrong.

But it seems that small minority are just incapable of doing that, and they are making it dangerous for everyone else doing the right thing.

Sitting next to a guy in the bus who I'm guessing is coming home from Tafe. I know he is destined to fail. How do I know this?

On his Tafe report, he has written Tafe as "Taif".

I've disowned my mum for the last 10 years and will never ever speak to her again. Forcing me to raise my little sister when I was only 2 years older than her. She chose hard needle ElephantJuice over us and I'll never forgive a person like that.

Just dropped my guts silently on the train. I know it was a successful drop going off the 75% of passengers dry reaching.

And that's fair enough, mate. You're a good man.

I'm just saying that there are usually factors which direct people down one path or another in life.
