Majority of people whinging about the proposed new tax won't even be effected by it, $15 a week for those earning over 100k a year.

The problem is the hypocrisy of him calling in a new tax to pay off the debt we've accrued while we go into debt purchasing fighter planes we don't actually need.

That's the issue. Not to mention the thousand other frustrating things he's done.

"There will be no carbon tax."

If people vote for Abbott because he said there won't be any more taxes, you're a dead set f**king idiot.

He's a politician FFS.

I don't mind the fighter planes, never know when the communists will attack.

I can think of a lot worse things that money could be spent on.

Fighter planes could well be needed. Those in the know have more of an idea than the rest of us.

We are back in the cycle, Labor are idiots and run us into debt. Libs have to come in and be the assholes making the hard decisions to dig us back out.

I don't have a problem with this tax in theory as long as it only targets high income earners, people in more fortunate economic positions should be able to share a greater burden of economic responsibility.

Fighter planes could well be needed. Those in the know have more of an idea than the rest of us.

We don't need any more fighter planes. Australia is not under any threat from any country for the foreseeable future. The problem is that 'those in the know' on this area are generally those who have a lot to gain from any expansion of the military-industrial complex or are highly authoritarian neo-cons who enjoy having an oversized military from an emotional perspective.

We are back in the cycle, Labor are idiots and run us into debt. Libs have to come in and be the assholes making the hard decisions to dig us back out.

This is a myth. Australia's debt is a non-issue. Australia's public debt as a percentage of GDP is lower than any Western power with the exception of Russia, which is a country that we should not be seeking to emulate at all.

In terms of overall economic policy Labor didn't do too badly, the stimulus package was done by the textbook and whilst the idea of giving cheques to people was somewhat ridiculed it has been proven to be one of the most effective ways of quickly injecting money into the economy.

The only economic areas I would strong criticise the Labor government for off the top of my head were the stripping away of welfare payments to single mothers and the incredibly soft implementation of the mining tax which was a major error.

Anyway don't blame me as I voted for neither Kang nor Kodos.

A decent way of saving money would be to process refugees in Australia. That's a win-win-win scenario.

a) It's vastly cheaper than processing refugees in Papua New Guinea
b) It's the right thing to do
c) It is legal under international law (the current situation is not)

Comrade Whall, I thought you'd be down for us to follow Russia?

Well firstly I am a social democrat not a communist.

Secondly though, the current economic situation in Russia is different than it was under the former Soviet Union. Russia under Putin is a vastly different animal and quite probably beats out the United States as the most (fiscally, although socially Russia aren't exactly hippies either) conservative country in the Western World. Indeed, I'd mount a very strong case that Russia with a very strong oligarchy quite possibly represents the closest thing we have to fascism in the modern world (and by fascism I mean the original definition of the word, the merger of corporate and state power). Although with the ridiculously strong influence that moneyed interests have in the United States with their crazily loose political campaign contribution laws they aren't far off.

What's the carbon tax got to do with it? I'm talking about the hypocrisy of their spin - we need to lower deficit by raising taxes then we'll go out and buy planes. We may as well call the tax the 'plane' tax.

Secondly, Abbot has broken more promises in his short time than Gillard ever did. At least the CT was designed to benefit the country. This is not.

I don't mind the fighter planes, never know when the communists will attack.

At the expense of your grandparents pension? That's one option they could use the money on...

... by selling public assets.

Look, Labor is a shambles, I agree. But the Libs running the show is like letting the corrupt aristocracy into leadership and expecting them to look out for the good of the common citizen. They are very good at making you feel like you can trust them while they rob you and your childrens future.
