ALso saw an interesting thing in the new AFL Cap laws - you can spend under the cap and use that saving over the cap in other years.

Eg you're going to be shit anyway, your better juniors aren't ready, sign up some filler players on the cheap, get through a season best as possible, when you're good it's easier to retain some of your players due to the savings of previous years.

Hard to police I imagine, but interesting

will starting seeing back ended 4 year contracts of 100/100/100/450 salaries

I think Tedesco + Mansour have both been pretty brave to not sign for Canberra tbh. Im certainly happy as a footy fan, that Tigers side will be good to watch soon.

But I've really changed my stance on 'player loyalty' these days. It's still great when you see it happen. But I think they're kind of mad. Footy is not a particularly long career. 10 years, often less, sometimes a little bit longer if you're good enough to last. You could get your career severely dulled by injury anytime (see Chris Lawrence and others) which hurts your future earning ability.

Plus the years most people spend learning a trade or going to uni or whatever your spending playing footy. You make a good wage, but not a lifetimes wage (unless you're particularly canny), and it's harder to retrain and whatnot after you've finished playing.

It's nice when loyalty crops up, and I'm sure it's nice to keep playing with their mates, but i don't think we should expect them to show loyalty, they're perfectly entitled to take whatever money they can IMO

Good point.

At the same time, I also believe it's in the players best interest long term to find a balance between a good wage and a good environment. No point going to the highest bidder if the player is going to be miserable and his career is going to suffer as a result.

Not to mention, the ones that usually sign these outrageous deals tend to be up and comers who have yet to really develop yet. Take Tedesco for instance, he's somebody who's been raised on the Tigers playbook and has a good understanding of the players around him. Up-rooting and moving to Canberra where there isn't that guarantee would make life difficult. Especially with a coach of Sticky's track record.

There was some interesting discussion on the Knights earlier. I actually think they have some talent coming through who can make a real difference to them in 2-3 years time. However, they'll need to handle the transition between them. I don't mind the like of Rochow albeit, his form has dipped a bit this year - if they can make a few signings to improve their pack they'll be fine.

I'm hearing that Hannant is virtually a done deal to join them next year which would be a coup. If they can sign a backrow or two and a hooker to replace Gids who needs a tap on the shoulder, they could be back on track as early as next year.

What do Knights fans think of an Ennis homecoming? I know he's odds on at joining the Sharks but I'm surprised that there hasn't been any discussion. Has a really good relationship with Bennett and given that he began his career with the Knights, it'd seem like a poetic way for his career to finish up.

He'd be a nice upgrade on Gids and it'd give Clydesdale or whoever a good player to learn off of.

Question: Why are they learning about church and religion in a public school?

This has been discussed at length here by a lot of us. Some think it shouldn't be taught at all, and others believe it should be taught in an impartial way in the same way history and geography is taught. Religion is, after all, part of society no matter how much atheists would prefer it not to be.

I had religious education in primary school. 60 minutes that you would want your kid doing something a bit more constructive in school a week (especially if the kid is a dumbass and needs extra work)

Constructive stuff like art, music, and PE?

If there were an effective way to police it, I'd love to see a similar concept at work in the NRL. As you say, clubs that are struggling big time get some extra incentive to be conservative now (rather than paying overs for shit) knowing they'll be able to buy big in future years.

I agree you have to factor all that in if you were deciding your future. It's more that I don't think you can begrudge players chasing the cash at all anymore, given the various factors.

I'm not sure why Tedesco is being praised as being loyal - he signed for someone else and then changed his mind. That's hardly the action of a passionate, loyal player.

unfortunately that is up to the video ref, not us or you

There is no possible, legitimate, legal, sane or reasonable way on this planet that we will win anything this year without a quality dummy-half, and we certainly won't start winning against quality opposition like the 'Boys tonight.

Pete: how is Milford going to Brisbane any different to Tedesco going to Canberra? Milf is a bit more experienced, but otherwise the situations are very similiar.

Cowboys seem to be coming into some good form of late. Thurston was damn good against Melbourne.

The other thing I assume would happen with the idea of being able to save what you dont spend for future years would that there would be a minimum spend on the cap (94% or something it is in AFL, probably similar), so it couldn't be completely abused.

But it would allow you to time your spending I guess, might only be a year where you have that extra player of quality but if you feel you're close to winning you could grab that guy who'd take you to the next level. Risk reward sort of thing (would probably require some clever juggling the year afterwards).
