Jeez the Cowboys will have a backrow next year with Kelepi signing on. It's a shame we couldn't fit him in behind guys like Moeroa, Pauli and Paulo...
THE Sydney conspiracy is real and the Cowboys should be allowed to request a Pommy referee in future finals campaign, Kennedy MP Bob Katter demanded.
Mr Kennedy launched an extraordinary attack on the National Rugby League in Federal Parliament on Thursday, attacking the ?integrity and capabilities? of referees in the wake of the Cowboys contentious 31-30 finals loss to Sydney last week.
And he declared that the NRL must allow teams from outside of Sydney the ability to request ?neutral? referees from England, New Zealand or France in future finals campaigns.
?For the third consecutive year the Cowboys have been blatantly robbed of a winning finals performance,? Mr Katter said.
?The argument of human error flies in the face of the penalty of the last three years.?
It wasn?t just the no try decision against co-captain Johnathan Thurston in the shadows of full-time that drew Mr Katter?s ire.
He took aim at a decision to rule a penalty for interference on Sonny Bill Williams in the 73rd minute which lead to the Roosters matchwinning field goal.
Mr Katter slammed the late tackles on Thurston that went unchecked.
And he came close to throwing his trademark cowboy hat to the ground in disgust when he vented about a Shaun Kenny-Dowall obstruction that was not called when the match was on the line at 30-all as proof the conspiracy was real.
?It is impossible to accept an argument that referees just make mistakes,? he fumed.
He took it a step further, saying the Thurston no try decision was ?a prima facie case of bias?.
?The semi-finals experience in the last three years indicates where a non-Sydney based team, in fact the team furthest away from Sydney, plays a Sydney team there exists in the minds of match officials,
consciously or otherwise a prejudicial mindset that is Sydney centric,? he said.
?This results in incorrect or biased rulings which occur in close call situations.
?In each of these key calls the decision gets made in Sydney?s favour.?
Cowboys general manager football Peter Parr did not want to be drawn on the conspiracy calls, but admired Mr Katter?s passion.
?Bob has always been a passionate supporter of the people of North Queensland and the Cowboys,? he said.
?This is just another example of it.
?No doubt people up here believe we?ve had some dud calls over the past few years.
?Bob is just reflecting a lot of those views.?
