but.. are you going for the money, or the experience?

afterall, pretty sure aussie schools would pay more than chinese schools..

Unfortunately, his options are limited due to no teaching degree.

That's why our opinion of the Phillipines differs I guess, checked my email now, a lot of the good prospects are Into schools or LS that require a degree I'm teaching.

English was widely taught. It hasn't been compulsory at schools for a while, with the government preferring students focus on Bahasa Malay. So the older the person, the more likely they are to speak English.

Thailand, unless you are in the tourist areas, there is a good chance that no-one will have any idea what you're saying.

AFAIK it's still offered at all private schools and as a language option at govt schools too, but that might be state specific.

Certainly all major cities and decent sized towns it's almost unlucky to get someone who doesn't at least speak a few words.

It's definitely more about the experience, but you want enough money to be able to enjoy your time there.

China paid f**k all (roughly $1000-$1200 AUD a month) but that went a long way within the country.

My friend who taught in Boracay had to have an apartment above a bar, had no hot water, and could never afford to go out drinking or for dinner.

I'm on around $1900-2000 a month this year. Hope that Aussie dollar stays weak until after I convert all my currency over.

They really aren't. I can be on pretty much whatever I ask in virtually any country in Asia or the Middle East with a Bachelor's Degree + experience + a TEFL/CELTA.

The trick is finding a job that doesn't work me like a dog. I don't want to work weekends, I want paid vacations, and I don't want 35-40 hours in a classroom. I could work a shitty, too long job here.

The only exception would be if I wanted to teach in an international school, which isn't something I'm interested in. If I wanted to do real teaching, I'd finish my half-finished Masters of Education and just do it here.

i always wanted to get into teaching, but the pay deterred me..

that being said, am seriously considering a path towards academia in latter career once i CBF'd with corporate life..

but at that point i'd be teaching fee paying adults, not kids, so don't know exactly how fulfilling i'd find that..

f**k teaching kids. I did that for 2.5 years in South Korea. They're fun and it's not a strain on your brain, but so much more exhausting than teaching older kids/adults.

I found teaching 16-21 year olds was a lot more intellectually stimulating. There was extra prep work needed, but classes didn't feel like they were passing in slow motion because I was always engaged.

ah.. Mental stimulation.. I miss that..

Thankfully, I get mine from study + the occasional philosophical debate with one of my friends at uni. The rest of them don't contribute much in the way of discourse, so I'm glad for the one that does.

i will often start vigorous verbal debates with people, arguing against a point i very much agree with, purely for the challenge..

many of my friends say i do this simply because I'm a merkin...

but i disagree...

English is still offered, but where it was once compulsory at private + government schools it is now optional.

This is an outrage! Every person on earth should be speaking the Queen's English!

Savages. Bloody savages.

Related news, just received an email about a PDHPE gig at an international school in Guangzhou.

Culture wise Guangzhou is pretty much a vacuum compared to Peking. The food is good & there is an airport to get you to better places. Only a few hours train ride to HK as well which is a bonus.

I've never been to that airport, but I love it.

The fat f**k that works with me shit himself there, in the terminal and down the entrance ramp.

Guangzhou airport is terrible. I've never not had to take my shoes off in that crapshack.

Malaysia is a good shout. Pay for ESL is decent (The missus is looking at around 5-8,000 MYR a month for an ESL job) and as a base for a travel blogger KL probably can't be beat, being the hub for AirAsia and all.

Singapore has mad money for almost any job but the rent is murder. Still, if you're content to spend your time in a room smaller than a prison cell you stand to rake in the dough.

Indonesia was a pretty good destination a couple of years ago but the lunatics are starting to get in control of the asylum in terms of social policies. I've really enjoyed my time here but I'm glad I'm almost done. The missus had to skip work last week because the immigration department was on some kind of Razzia and her (reputable) school had to shut down so as to pay less bribe money. The currency here is in freefall (I get paid in greenbacks, so f**k yeah!), and the last time that happened a few cities were almost burnt to the ground.

f**k that airport. f**k it until it passes out.

The security people are nice. 18 months ago I forgot I had bought a butterfly knife. They found it in my carry on as we went through security. I shit myself & thought I might be in a bit of strife. All I got was a wave of the finger & they took the knife. The relief was almost orgasmic. Time in a chinese lock up wouldn't be very pleasant.
