This whole thing is an ego dent reaction from some people combined with a constant flow of a selective few media outlets that have been hell bent on dragging the Sharks through as much crap as possible.
They admitted to the ASADA requests..granted...Why?...So they can play footy and move on...that is it. There are a thousand arguments either way on that, but they just wanna get on with it. Some media personalities won't let it ever end. And we all know that will be with the players for ever.
You simply cannot expect a player under the enormous pressure, responsibilities and hats that Gal has to wear/carry after the last 2 years of crap from every angle to be emotionally in a great place. So he made a drunkin mistake...tweeted about some (no names in his tweet) at the nrl might be merkins. Anyone else ever done / said something drunk that may have been a mistake? Anyone?
So what do they do?...Take the opportunity to dish out the most ridiculously out of whack punishment ever. Crazy. And just adding to the weight he carries regardless.
The NRL has gone to great lengths to protect their players on the field with shoulder charge bans, no striking, kicker attack rules and more stringent concussion rules etc. Unfortunately, off the field, they throw them to the dogs ie/ and the media.
