Mat's red-eye dash for dad's tribute

By STEVE MASCORD

March 17, 2006

THE legacy of Steve Rogers will never be far away when Cronulla take the field in 2006.

Son Mat will catch the red-eye flight from Perth tonight after playing for the NSW Waratahs to be present at Toyota Park tomorrow night when the Sharks take on Brisbane.

The evening has been dedicated to Sharks icon Rogers, who died in January, aged 51.

"His name's going to be on our jumpers for the whole season," said captain Brett Kimmorley.

"And one bloke who was so passionate and committed about the Sharks being successful was Steve.

"If we can grab half of his passion for the club, then that will go a long way towards us achieving what we want to achieve this year."

Video highlights of Rogers' career will be a centrepiece of tomorrow night's presentation.

His family will be honoured in a jersey presentation, a song in his honour will be performed and club officials promise another "special surprise" dedicated to Rogers.

According to coach Stuart Raper, the death of the then-Sharks general manager has already had a big effect on the club's approach to the new season.

''We've deliberately been low key," Raper said.

"I've tried to stay out of the media.

"The death of Steve was a sombre thing.

"We just wanted to keep everything within [the club] a bit and not start spruiking what we're going to do, how we're going to play."

New Cronulla chief executive Greg Pierce said: "It shows how important this occasion is to Mat that he is rushing back from Perth.

"There will be special commemorative jerseys presented to [widow] Ingrid, Mat and [son] Don.

"And there is going to be something done that is so secret even I don't know about it."

Well my preference was 'The Steve Rogers Memoria Stadium' but I'll settle for anything that Toyota sees fit to allow...!

Admin guy who was the major player in getting the Sharks promoted to 1st grade in '66, I'll get more detail from my Colour Me Black White & Blue when I get home and/or sober up, which ever comes second.

Bit rich for them to re-name a stand that was erected in honour of a bloke who helped get the club into the competition...

I hope they don't do that.
