Central Qld is the dots on the map argument to me.

South East Qld should get another team before Central Qld. Sth East Qld also would add more to any potential broadcast deal when compared to a team based in Rockhampton.

I agree and most would that there are too many teams in Sydney. Arguably there are two Sydney clubs too many, but who do you cull and what of their fans? I've heard plenty of suggestions about which club is or isn't dispensable and basically there is a case in point for each and everyone of them. Yes some are more vulnerable than others but it will be up to strong leadership to decide our strategic plan for the future.

David Gallop isn't strong leadership. His track record is knee jerk media driven leadership.

My bottom line is that 16 NRL teams for our code is the magic number, any more will dilute the playing talent pool, dilute the distribution of funds, dilute the amount of times your club will be telecast on free to air and create more lopsided contests. There were only two games where clubs hit the 50 point mark in 2011, for me it is vindication that for the here and now, a 16 team competition is the right balance.

This all comes back to the most fundamental questions that the commission must answer.
What is the NRL?
What should be the prerequisites be for all current and future clubs to participate in the NRL?

Or how about an EPL (English premier league) structure with relegations for the team that gets the spoon maybe relegated to NSW cup?
Could it work?

Cant work financially

Its inevitable that a NFL style conference system will come.
18 Teams
2x9 team conferences based on previous seasons results

each team in your group play twice, once for the other.
Equals 25 rounds SIMPLE

Or 3x6 team conferences for a 22 round season. The AFL needs to look at doing this also IMO.

For both codes, having more than half of the teams located in one state isn't a sign of a healthy competition. But expansion needs to be done in conjunction with moving teams to where the fans are.

AFL: 3 Melbourne teams need to relocate (prob Saints, North and Hawks). One to Ballarat/Bendigo, one to Tassie and another as an expansion club in NQ/NT.

NRL: 2 Sydney teams need to relocate (maybe Penrith and Cronulla), and two new teams to expand the comp. Probably Central Coast, second Brisbane team, Perth and Wellington. The advantage the NRL has is that they would be taking the game to areas that have at least a passing interest, rather than pushing an unfamiliar/unwelcome sport on a region (i.e. GWS).

I'll add that interstate relocation isn't the death knell for a club in its original town - the Swans and Lions still have big followings back in Melbourne.

There are three realistic bids when it comes to bid potential - obviously Central Coast and Brisbane Bombers... then of course Perth. CQ is by no means "guaranteed support" compare to the other bids.

Cronulla -> Wellington
Sea-Eagles -> Sunshine Coast/North Brisbane

Bring in Perth and 2nd Brisbane/Bears.

If you want to follow the English, do what we do in the Super League.

Award Franchises for a set number of years. After these years all clubs have to resubmit. The best 16, 18, however many you want are chosen.
You use criteria of ground, youth development, ability to spend the cap, sponsor deals, tv rights, location, cheating. etc.
Its difficult for a smaller team to look better than a bigger one so it doesn't mean loads of changes. But if a current team are not doing it, instead of constant whinging about it, they will be found out.
Sydney clubs will be replaced then, but only when a better bid comes along. Which after a two team expansion (Perth, Brisbane) may be a long time in coming.

Sydney population 4 575 000

Rockhampton population 76000.

Sydney clubs = 8.5. Average population per club: 538 000

Wow. Compelling argument. If 538000 people can support a squad of 17, therefore Rocky can support 2 props and a ball boy.

Think about it. The non Sydney clubs that have a bigger population than the Sydney average are Auckland, Melbourne and Brisbane. All the rest are smaller.

Roosterphin, you are a complete and utter brainless f*cktard. Mods, please put this thread in the bin with all the other stupid "cull Sydney clubs" threads.

If marketed as a CQ team and not simply a Rocky team there are a number of towns around Rocky that people would travel from in the same way that the Cowboys get support from surrounding regions.

Don't under estimate the support for league in that area, people will travel to see an NRL team in that area. The worst thing that happened to the QLD cup team in the area was that they stopped identifying as a CQ team and became a Rocky centric team. They would be better supported if they incorporated the entire area.

Losing Sydney teams should and will happen, it will be short term pain for some but the long term gains should be the over riding factor for the game to expand and counter rivals.

There is a easy way to address expansion

and that is for each current NRL club to adopt a region and play 1 trial and 1 to 3 premiership games at that location - rather than say usin ggosford all the time

Add coverage in NSW Cup, Qld Cup and NZ Cup levels for those regions also

The benefit is that these junior regions become a catchment area for the NRL clubs

Auckland - (3 games Wellington NZ)
Brisbane - Alice Springs (1 game)
Canterbury - Canterbury NZ (3 games)
Canberra - Albury (1 game)
Cronulla - Adelaide (3 games)
Easts - Rockhampton (3 games)
Gold Coast - Coffs Harbour (1 game)
Manly - Sunshine Coast (1 game)
Melbourne - Hobart (1 game)
Newcastle - Tamworth (1 game)
Nth Qld - (Mt Isa, Cairns 1 game each)
Parramatta - (Darwin 1 game)
Penrith - Dubbo (1 game)
St Merge - (no issue here Wollongong)
Souths - (1 game SCG)
Wests Tigers - (Darwin 1 game)

and I would be adding 4 teams
- Perth (1 game Pilbara)
- Ipswich (1 game Toowomba)
- CC Bears (3 games NSO)
- Wellington NZ (1 game Rotorua )

It won't happen. Sydney is the game remember, the NRL has no interest in expansion.

Saints used to play in Rocky pre season each year, one of the reasons i became a fan.

It's a great idea for areas that have no NRL team.

Kick the outsiders out of the Sydney comp.

There should be a Sydney League Comp and a separate NRL.

We can have a Superbowl-type match each season.

Whinging leeches on the Sydney tit can run their own show.

Do we expand and have 2 new teams or do we expand and get rid of 2 teams?? Maybe we add 3 teams and get rid of a Sydney team. NZ must be close to pushing for a 2nd team given the rise of the kiwi players and International side.

Wasn't that what Gus Gould mentioned with a Sydney conference and the other conference made up of Knights/CC/Raiders/QLD teams and NZ.
