There is a easy way to address expansion

and that is for each current NRL club to adopt a region and play 1 trial and 1 to 3 premiership games at that location - rather than say usin ggosford all the time

Add coverage in NSW Cup, Qld Cup and NZ Cup levels for those regions also

The benefit is that these junior regions become a catchment area for the NRL clubs

I like this. Solid concept, not sure about Melbourne playing 3 games in Tassie though. Remember they are still in an emerging market.

Just on QLD suggestions.....
I don't think there is enough financial support or population to go with a Sunshine Coast team (I live here). You can forget a Central QLD team - even less population!
I would probably be more inclined to look at promoting one of the larger QLD Cup teams that are Brisbane based into the NRL, or Ipswich/West Brisbane region.

As long as clubs are
A) Contributing to the overall health of the game
Name a Sydney club that isnt doing this
B) Not holding the game back through not being able to compete on or off the field
Name a Sydney club that isnt doing this.
C) Have a decent stadium and can maintain the crowd avg for NRL
So the Non Sydney clubs fall short of the crowd average? Do you know how "averages" work??????

If marketed as a CQ team and not simply a Rocky team there are a number of towns around Rocky that people would travel from in the same way that the Cowboys get support from surrounding regions.

Don't under estimate the support for league in that area, people will travel to see an NRL team in that area. The worst thing that happened to the QLD cup team in the area was that they stopped identifying as a CQ team and became a Rocky centric team. They would be better supported if they incorporated the entire area.

Losing Sydney teams should and will happen, it will be short term pain for some but the long term gains should be the over riding factor for the game to expand and counter rivals.
Given that people from Mackay travel to Cowboys games , I assume you mean the region from Emerald to Gladstone, maybe even Bundaberg.

You are still about half a million people short you fleabag!

Sydney population 4 575 000

Rockhampton population 76000.

Sydney clubs = 8.5. Average population per club: 538 000

Wow. Compelling argument. If 538000 people can support a squad of 17, therefore Rocky can support 2 props and a ball boy.

Think about it. The non Sydney clubs that have a bigger population than the Sydney average are Auckland, Melbourne and Brisbane. All the rest are smaller.

Roosterphin, you are a complete and utter brainless f*cktard. Mods, please put this thread in the bin with all the other stupid "cull Sydney clubs" threads.

Kick the outsiders out of the Sydney comp.

There should be a Sydney League Comp and a separate NRL.

We can have a Superbowl-type match each season.

Whinging leeches on the Sydney tit can run their own show.

I like it! Means Sydney fans can can catch every game of the season, good rivalries, and bigger home crowds. Keep Newcastle (close enough) and bring the Bears back. Perfect.

Brisbane, Gold Coast, Cowboys, NZ, Canberra, Melbourne, maybe bring in Perth, Adelaide, Sunshine Coast - whoever - have a separate comp. Please yourselves.

Mackay to Rocky is a shorter distance, if folk are prepared to travel to Townsville from Mackay they will also travel to Rocky.

They wouldn't have much drama filling a stadium the size they are proposing in that part of the world.

It won't happen. Sydney is the game remember, the NRL has no interest in expansion.

You may have been serious, but I doubt it so, what a typical biased QLD comment.

The NRL has already stated expansion wll happen.

You do remember superleague (the competition started by broncos). It relied on Stdney teams to ensure it was a goer. Superleage was a joke and came back to the table after they realised they were going nowhere.

Brisbane tried to start their own competition and it was a joke, start your own comp again and we can have the old NSWRL comp, lets wait a few years and see which comp is alive and kicking.

Maybe it keeps coming up because there are valid reasons for it coming up.

As one way of looking at the issue, if the comp was to start afresh (obviously totally hypothetical), how many Sydney clubs would be admitted into a 16 team comp if they were competing against all the new bids? What about an 18 team comp? 20 teams? That would highlight the strengths and weaknesses of every single team and how they add to the NRL. It sounds like the ESL does something like this on a regular basis, but for real!

all i know is something needs to change in sydney. The crowds arent cutting it. Whether it be that we ensure that the draw makes it that all sydney teams play each other twice so we are getting 2 sets of supporters at these games, or just moving some less profitable clubs to bigger locations. something needs to be done.

I doubt it will make any difference.
Every single game is televised on 9 or fox.
That's the problem - it's too easy for people to stay home and watch the game in the lounge than get to the ground and watch it live.

I am a season ticket holder and don't have fox so I either go to the games or I don't see them.
I think I missed 1 sharks home game this year - due to family commitments.

Fox is cheaper and more convenient for families than going to the footy and shelling out $$$ for entry, parking food and drink.

And weaken the Cowpats. Great idea.

You still havent said where the 500 000 people are up there.

There were twice as many Sydney teams above average than non Sydney teams you f*cking goose! And one was Newcastle.

Outside NSW needs to pick up it's act, and that why these "cull Sydney" threads are a great indicator of the brainless geniuss in society. They would rather shrink the comp to go to a nice bush town somewhere that has no hope of getting anywhere near the Crowd numbers. FFS Rocky needs to have 20% of it's population go to games - which is like expecting Lang Park to have 400 000 thousand seats.

Now, tell me again Pennywise, why you and Mong should not be locked into an asylum?????

The issue here is the move away from Sunday afternoon football

There used to be 5 now you are lucky to see one

I wouldn't be done with Rugby League, i'd certainly be done with the NRL if Roosters got dumped. As for Sydney needing to pick up its act  The only reason the outside of Sydney average isn't god awful is because of the Broncos.

Expanding the game shouldn't come at the cost of alienating existing support for the game. Our current set up may not be perfect, but it's what we have so just deal with it!
