Honest question here but why is that?

are AFL tickets cheaper and packaged more family friendly?

Few reasons:
- they have a long tradition of membership culture. That has helped massively drive crowds. Nrl has only really started getting serious about memberships when smith took over in 2012,
- they have traditionally had bigger and better stadiums
- they haven’t sacrificed family friendly ko times for sake of tv, despite getting more money from tv
- They’ve based their teams in mostly big cities with Big populations
- they use a shared stadium Approach meaning better quality stadiums
- they have for years had very cheap kids tickets, adults are similar price to nrl
- Sydney people don’t like going out much lol

I doubt on a weekend in Melbourne you'd see youth spending hours on autumn and winter weekends surfing as they do in Sydney.Nor have all the media in Sydney worship AFL like they do in Victoria.
That being said we are closing the gap ratings wise, expansion wise, crowdwise will always be a difficult task.
Transport is a no brainer .Melbourne was planned Sydney was haphazardly done.

A big obstacle for rugby league is the media

in terms of genuinely good journalists there are maybe one or two

I very much doubt you'd have many more people than inner Melbourne in Western Sydney being avid surfers lol - as far as winter goes they came up with this nifty thing down in torquay called a wetsuit

The real reason is mentioned above, Sydney, and thus the NRL by extension, has a shit attendance and membership culture (probably because its near impossible to get around), you can even see this without using the other code as a comparison by just comparing NRL crowds & membership in Brisbane to Sydney

Why would they be? They are set up already for the next decade. Revenue is massive and growing significantly, they have the capital city footprint they want, a full womens comp and they will soon own marvel stadium outright. They seem to be pretty well set.

nrl has so much potential, but always has had. If it will ever realise it is the big question.

I find the Melbourne vs Sydney rivalry funny. Two big fish in a small pond arguing that they are sharks.

That said Sydney is a global city and Melbourne is not. If I recall correctly, Sydney is about a quarter of Australia's entire GDP. About the same as Victoria altogether. Add in regional NSW and it's 33%. Major international companies are more likely to be based in Sydney than Melbourne. Also Sydney is high on international brand awareness rankings, usually in the top 20 cities in the world. Melbourne rarely rates. Sydney has a world famous harbour with iconic landmarks. Melbourne has a dirty swamp river.

If I had to choose between having a coffee in a crappy lane way or an extra $100 billion to my economy, I know what I'd choose.

You do realise that the people who attend sports events of any kind are a small minority of the population? Even in Melbourne. You could literally add up every single person who goes to a fumbleball game, NRL, rugby union, cricket, soccer, netball, basketball et al match in the city and they won't even be the majority. Most people have no interest in sports attendance in general. You're literally complaining about tiny percentages of both populations.

the point the NRL needs to try and make (and good luck to them) is why a state government with a voting population more concerned with other things should be spending on more than the 4-5 existing stadiums? especially when you start requesting council and privately owned grounds get funding..
