Culling Penrith :lol: Lets just hand over the biggest junior nursery in the world to whoever wants it.

Exactly!

More teams added to the NRL is the answer over a given time period with strategic logic used as extra teams are included.

Simple as that!

This progressive stance will also increase the attractiveness of RL to our juniors instead of them being enticed to other football codes.

Problem is NRL refuse to expand whilst we have broke arse clubs.

Lol you reckon there's only 8000 Penrith fans out there? That may be their hard core base but there would easily be 40,000+ people who go for the Panthers.

Just because they aren't sitting in the stadium every week doesn't mean they don't exist.

Anyone who thinks culling teams is a step forward is a moron.

Penrith and Cronulla shouldn't be in the league in the first place.

You've banged on about this Sydney-culling idea for years... and each time you've never provided an explanation... how do you expect fans to stick around and support patched-up and merged teams?

I can't see a way of the process working without alienating thousands, sorry.

You might not follow a merged Bulldogs but I would.

My explanation is if we have half the number of teams in Sydney we should get double the crowds - or thereabouts.

I can't believe that people will switch their allegiance to AFL, take a look at GWS crowds.

Head in the sand mate !

Anyway, it's not all about crowds, it's mostly about TV viewers & the current 16 teams draw $200 M per year into the game. Cutting / merging teams may reduce interest / viewers & therefore reduce the next TV deal.

You know what reduces viewer interest? The sight of near empty stadiums on TV.

Probably the bigger issue is financial sustainability and the challenge with over saturation if the customer base spread too thin, battle for sponsors etc. the NRL TV windfall has given a short term reprieve to the struggling clubs but its just a matter of time before the gap widens again.

Any franchising company knows that too many outlets in too small an area means problems for all of them.

Interestingly SL.has decided to drop two teams from end of next year in order to split the games money differently.

So that was 1 game was it?

that's the average not total so times that by 8. 122,584 people on average attended NRL in Sydney. Compare to other codes in any other city in world it stacks up pretty well. Especially as the popualtion is 5m

Spot on. Times 9 in truth and that turnout per head compares with any city in the world.

EG Milan has a similar metro population but only 2 soccer teams. NYCs metro area population is probably 3 to 4 times bigger but has 2 baseball and 2 football teams. London has about 11 soccer teams but again a population probably 3 times bigger for metro area.

Its only poor if we compare with melbourne where AFL turnout is phenomenal.

Yep. Our on field performance bar the odd year has alot to do with it. If there wasn't a demand we wouldn't of had the 8 or so FTA games this year. Then you add our Juniors that bring more to RL then a full house every week does

Exactly don't get me wrong NRL needs to fix schedule and prices up but it's more then a decent effort. I am going to the Sat DH this week. Realistically I could go to the other games as well. I imagine that the Mrs wouldn't be happy with that it's the way of life I can choose when to go as anyone in Sydney can the butthurt people that can't are the most vocal.

During the season. She checks the draw and plans stuff for non Penrith days. Imagine if I said sorry I need to go to all Sydney games. Even if I did when we played the Dragons at Kogarah. That Sat night there were 3 games on in Sydney in total 50k attended. It was impossible to go to all 3 games.

Congratulations. I probably would too, but I can guarantee you there would be plenty who just wouldn't do it.

I get that on face value. Reality is very different.

I can't believe that people will switch their allegiance to AFL, take a look at GWS crowds.
I'm not suggesting they would - I'm just suggesting there'll be THOUSANDS who walk away and won't return.

Never were there more fair weather fans. 2009 round 20 Rabbits v Roosters drew 11,000.

I acknowledge Manly fans can be pretty bad too, but where were the other 48,000 punters that night?

Souths averaged 14715 in 2009, higher than Manly that year who were Grand Finalists

Not sure of your point but the fact that Milan has only two clubs seems to be a not very logical argument for having 8 clubs.

Inter avg'd 44,201 and AC 40,876 last season, both clubs have huge revenues bigger than all NRL clubs and the game put together.

Yes Sydney has more fans attending RL across 8 clubs but is that such a good thing when the fans in the city are diluted down by 8 to an avg of 15k?

I'd suggest every sydney team has more fans outside Sydney then in it. Problem is its too hard for a large % to get to games weekly. Having games taken to various places helps this. Take brisbane for example, each home game the crowd is 70% home support. 30% away support is a big number. Just shows how much support Sydney teams do have even if it isnt all based in sydney.

True for some clubs, massive amount of Sth Sydney fans in perth for some reason, quite a few Wests and St george as well, not many manly or others I have to say looking at bumper stickers, people wearing colours at Perth NRL games etc.

Warriors are by far the best supported club away from home, how they don't have a massive membership base is criminal really. I would say at the 20k nib game this year 7-8000 of them would have been Warriors fans. 4-5000 Sth Sydney and rest neutrals
