The captain of the Australian under-20s football team, Sydney FC defender Sebastian Ryall, has been charged with having sex with an under-age girl.

Ryall, 19, has been charged by police with having sex with a 13-year-old girl in January 2008. Ryall was aged 18 at the time.

He has been suspended from representing Sydney FC or his country until September 3, for breaching the Football Federation Australia code of conduct by bringing the game into disrepute. FFA says the suspnsion is imposed solely due to the criminal charge, and that it has not formed a view on the player's guilt or innocence.

Ryall has pleaded not guilty to the charge, with his lawyer saying he will strenuously defend his innocence.

Just to make it clear, he was 18 as you will read.

This probably won't be anywhere near as big because Sebastian Ryall is a nobody compared to Johns, playing a sport which is, for many people, second choice in both southern and northern states. So already the public interest in the story is diminished.

Next, the FFA have basically put his career on hold... so he's already lost there.

And, while I don't think there will be mass hysteria ala Johns, it has already made front page of most major daily online papers

It's already made overseas news outlets. To say there will be no hysteria is f**ked -- he's been accused of sexually assaulting a 13 YEAR OLD, FFS.

not rugby league .. so there will probably be no massive hysteria..

I really hope they go at him for all he is worth if the claims are true..

Well, that and the fact that there are formal charges in this case so there is a limit to what can be said. Why do you think the Brett Stewart incident was only referred to in passing by the Four Corners report, and got much less coverage in the media at the time once he was charged?

Yeah, it's hitting most Australian sports sites as top news item, plus online newspaper editions (although Johns still gets the nod for now).

But for the people thinking everyone has an agenda against the NRL, Matthew Johns > some 19 year old Sydney FC player, in terms of importance in the sporting landscape, and in the general community. So get a grip please

Sydney FC and Australian under 20s player Sebastian Ryall has been stood down by Football Federation Australia after being charged with engaging in a sexual act with a 13-year-old girl, the FFA said in a statement today.

The charge arises out of an incident that took place in NSW in January 2008, when Ryall was aged 18.

Ryall, who was scheduled to leave on Saturday with the Australian under-20 team for a camp in the Netherlands, recently transferred to Sydney from Melbourne Victory.

He has been suspended from participation in football matches in Australia, including the A-League, until September 3 and is also ineligible to participate in national team competition until the criminal case has been determined, or September 2009, whichever is the later.

FFA chief executive Ben Buckley said the matter involving Ryall was brought to the attention of the sport's ruling body and Sydney FC on April 23.

He said the matter had not been publicly disclosed until now because the issue had to be discussed with the player and his legal representatives, his club and the FFA's lawyers.

Ryall was sanctioned following a finding under clause 2.1 of the FFA's code of conduct that he had brought the game into disrepute through being charged with a criminal offence.

Ryall has pleaded not guilty to the charge and his lawyer said he would strenuously defend his innocence.

Buckley said the FFA had not formed a view of the player's innocence or guilt, stressing that the sanction was imposed on the basis that the criminal charge had brought the game into disrepute.

Ryall has seven days to appeal against the FFA decision.

Sydney FC said it had no knowledge of the incident when it signed Ryall from Melbourne Victory in November last year.

But Sydney fully endorsed the sanctions imposed by the FFA.

"The Sydney football club, which has its own code of conduct, demands that only the very highest standard of behaviour is acceptable from all of its employees," the club said in a statement.

"This has been acknowledged by all of the club's players, coaches and staff.

"Given that the incident has resulted in a criminal charge and is presently before the courts, the club, its players, coaches and staff will not discuss any matters relating to the incident.

"Once the proceedings before the courts have been finally determined, the club will then make a formal statement."

Ryall played for Sydney FC on Wednesday night in their pre-season match against the Macarthur Rams. A deep cross from Ryall led to the only goal in the match, won 1-0 by Sydney.

The NRL suspended fullback Brett Stewart for four rounds under the player's code of conduct after he was charged with sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl.

Swimmer Nick D'Arcy was expelled from the Olympic team for the Beijing games for bringing himself and the team into disrepute for attacking retired swimmer Simon Cowley.
