So this afternoon Comanche finished at 3:52pm. They finished 49minutes behind Wild Oats.

A brilliant effort from Comanche considering the yacht is new and was untested in such a long tough race. Well they've tested it in the toughest race in the world now and the skipper Ken Read is proud of the performance.

There is plans now to try to make Comanche a bit lighter to make it improve somewhat in light winds.

Ken Read the skipper also revealed that early this morning in heavy wind Comanche reached 32knots. I reckon no supermaxi in the world can match that.

There is a good battle now in Storm Bay Area for placings 3rd-6th

Currently it's Rio, Ragamuffin, Black Jack and Alive.

Between them there is only 26nm-31.5nm to finish line. So only 5.5nm separates them.

They are all in light winds in Storm Bay. Going at around 6knots.

The Derwent currently only has a light breeze making it slow going to finish.

Expecting them to finish around 2-3am.

Handicap top 8 update:

1. Maluka of Kermandie
2. Wild Rose
3. Quikpoint Azzurro
4. Love and War
5. Ariel
6. Zen
7. After Midnight
8. Local Hero

We won't have a good idea an expert said on Handicap until probably Tuesday morning.

Still hard to tell depending on conditions.

Out of the 117 yachts 7 have retired so far.

Tina of Melbourne: Hull damage
Bear Necessity: Rudder issue
Occasional Coarse Language: Steering problems
Willyama: Mainsail damage
Triton: Rig
Brindabella: Rudder Bearings
Last Tango: Sick crew and sail damage, after dropping sick crew member off at Botany Bay resumed race but retired soon after.

The Strong southerlies in the afternoon and evening are really making it tough going for the medium and smaller yachts.

The other small and medium yachts are getting battered and will have to do well to avoid issues in the night.

Obviously Loyal added to that.

Also:
Sextant retired not with any damage just that weather conditions were going to be too tough and risky in Bass Strait and beyond down the Tasmanian coast. They didn't want to risk any damage to the yacht and putting the crew at danger.

Giacomo a 70 footer coming 8th had to retire. At 5:45pm today they became dismasted.

Wedgetail at 7:40pm today had to retire with mast damage and the lost the top of their rig.

Unfortunately these 2 yachts couldn't handle gale force southerly winds.

So last night at 2:30am Ragamuffin finished 3rd around 10hours behind line honours.

Ragamuffin were closely followed by Rio, Black Jack and Alive.

Black Jack in Bass Strait went the furthest way out to sea and lost ground going from 4th-25th.

Coming down the coast of Tasmania Black Jack still stayed furthest out to sea and the gamble paid off. They then were quickest in fleet at the time.

So Black Jack did really well to end up with a top 5 finish when it looked like top 10 was beyond them.

66 yachts have finished with 39 still sailing.

Hopefully the 39 yachts left all get to Hobart without any major problems.

On Handicap it is pretty much certain Roger Hickman's Wild Rose has done it.

Maluka of Kermandie is 2nd on Handicap and still at sea but it's unlikely they can take it off Wild Rose.

Roger Hickman skipper and owner of Wild Rose completed his 38th Sydney to Hobart.

This is his 3rd Handicap win.

Great achievement.
