SIMS FUTURE TO BE RESOLVED
TARIQ Sims’ future at the Cowboys should be resolved within a fortnight.
The bullocking lock forward earlier this month discussed with the club the possibility of a release from the final year of his NRL contrac...t so he can return to Sydney.
However North Queensland’s busy schedule since the news broke at the start of the month has meant talks have had to be put on the back burner. But Cowboys football manager Peter Parr said the upcoming representative week could offer the chance to come to a resolution.
“When all this came to light we were on the cusp of playing three games in 12 days or something so our whole focus has been on this little period of football,” he said.
“We have Parramatta this week and then a week off ... so it’s on our radar to sit down with Tariq in the next couple of weeks and try get some clarity on what we’re going to do there.”
Channel 9 commentator Phil Gould said during Friday’s coverage of the Cowboys’ controversial loss to Manly that Sims had already been given permission to start talks with Sydney clubs.
Parr said that was not true.
“That’s incorrect,” he said.
Sims and partner Ashleigh Sudholz welcomed a daughter into the world in March, sparking the investigation into whether he might be granted an early release so they can be closer to family.
While the Cowboys have invested plenty of time and support into Sims after his run of horror injuries in 2011 and 2012 and he is a legitimate NRL star, it would be unlikely the club would deny him a release if the request became official.
“Once we get some clarity from Tariq about exactly what he wants to do, then we’ll make some decisions around that,” Parr said.
“We always take into account the players and player welfare, but we also have to have that balance that we also need to do the right thing by the club, Tariq, his teammates and our members.”
The potential availability of Sims has caused in the market place.
St George Illawarra, South Sydney and the Sydney Roosters are all reportedly interested in Sims, who is firming to make his New South Wales State of Origin debut next month.
Meanwhile, Townsville product Valentine Holmes has re-signed with Cronulla.
Despite speculation linking the exciting back to the Cowboys, it is understood he signed a three-year contract with the Sharks.
