Taumalolo and Holmes trialing for NFL?

I'd like to see a rule brought in by the NRL forbidding players from wearing and appearing in other codes' apparel...caps, shirts, singlets, beanies, anything.

As employees and ambassadors of the NRL, they should only promote the code they are employed with.

I'd also like to see the pair rock up to Sharks / Cowboys training for the first day and there's a NRL agent there saying they both been de-registered...so see ya later.

What nonsense. I've seen AFL and soccer players at NRL games. You can't control what legal entertainment players choose to consume in their spare time.

The most important question is - How many hours have these two logged playing Madden?

If they can't at least win a few games on all Madden difficulty then they need not bother.

Shrug. Unlike Union, nothing we could do about it if NFL actually wanted to poach stars. The earning power is several magnitudes above. Luckily the games are so fundamentally different.

Best RL can do is continue growing internationally to give our stars more opportunities within the sport.

Oh no the NRL can do something, in fact their already now proposing something to crack down on contracted players holding workouts with the NFL.

"NRL players trialling for NFL franchises might quickly become a thing of the past.

Club bosses are keen to put a clause in the standard NRL player contract that prevents such actions and NRL CEO Todd Greenberg has backed them after the CEOs conference on Wednesday.

"The clubs have made it clear that they don't want their players going to another code, including NFL, and risking serious injury," Greenberg told News Corp Australia.

"That is a view the NRL shares, we don't support players going off to play with or promote other codes.

"They are contracted to play with the NRL and we do not believe they should try their hand at another code and expect to come back to rugby league if it doesn't work out."

Any such clause would fall in line with ones in the current standard contract that prevents similar liaisons with rugby union or AFL clubs.

"We already have a clause in place prohibiting players going to play rugby union and AFL mid-contract and that will be extended to include NFL," Greenberg said.

"It is great to see NFL clubs recognising what great athletes are produced in the NRL.

"But at the end of the day, they are paid to play rugby league so we cannot let them risk injury and promote another code while they are registered with the NRL."

The proposed NRL crackdown comes in the wake of North Queensland powerhouse Jason Taumalolo and Cronulla flyer Valentine Holmes recently trialling for NFL recruiters in Los Angeles."

Fair enough action by the NRL but it doesn't stop poaching (hypothetically) or even trialling. Players/agents will respond in how they negotiate contracts. If they think they're a shot they'll go for it in between contracts.

If the NFL actually wanted our athletes (they don't.) they could afford to buy out our biggest contracts without blinking.

Player's association will have something to say about that proposal.

So Todd Greenberg can't apply for another job whlist with the NRL too?

Another mad idea from the NRL.

= their manager trying to get bigger contracts for them = more money for him.

Interesting theory.

"In the case of Taumalolo and Holmes, neither were offered NFL contracts after failing to reach the necessary target times required to play America’s most popular sport.

Both off contract in 2017, the US trip was seen by rival clubs as a play from their agent to boost their asking price on the NRL open market."

Do the NRL want players to stop boxing too?

We've got Elise Perry playing both soccer and cricket at an elite/international level at the same time .... No problems there.

Usain Bolt trialling out with Dortmund in the Budesliga .... No problems there.

Two players trying out .... Not a mass exodus. Wake up NRL.

More important issues to concern ... Match fixing ... Integrity Unit lack of work ethics ... Funding backflip.

This is just an NRL distraction away from ongoing concerns that they have bungled.

Yeaaaahhhhh............sitting on your arse watching a game of rival code is EXACTLY like trialling for a rival code.

Good God.

Players association have spoken against it, however the case they state probably isn't as convincing. If you are being paid to play NRL football then that should be the end of it.

"RLPA general manager for player relations Clint Newton said they would be against any blanket ban restricting the development of players and that clubs should treat each case individually.

“We understand and respect a club’s ability to enforce its right under the playing contract,’’ he said.

“Having said that, we think the interest from the NFL in our players showcases their incredible athletic ability and transferable skills, particularly to American football.

“Considering the popularity of the NFL and the huge potential that any exposure in the US market could have on the NRL, the focus on our players globally must also be seen as a positive for our game.

“We’d encourage players and their agents to discuss these types of opportunities with their clubs in the future so they can be treated on a case-by-case basis.”

Interestingly, Newton said the NRL should use America’s interest in rugby league and so too that of Jarryd Hayne’s NFL experiment, as a way of attracting American footballers who have been cut.

“Hopefully we start to see more athletes who miss out on the NFL looking to trial for the NRL if they miss out on a contract over there,’’ said Newton, who was born in California and played four Tests for the US Tomahawks.

“They’d just need to get their head around playing for a lot less.’’

Utter garbage Mr Newton, it's a one way Street and you know it. the Nrl and clubs have every right to insist contractually that players be forbidden from trialling in other codes under contract.
