The Parramatta Eels have confirmed their squad to face the Melbourne Storm in their first match of the 2025 season at AAMI Park, Melbourne on Sunday evening.

New recruits Isaiah Iongi, Zac Lomax, Ronald Volkman and Jack Williams are set to make their official Eels debuts, becoming Eels #851, #852, #853 and #854 respectively.

Off the back of his contract upgrade, Ryley Smith has also been named to make his Eels debut from the interchange as Eel #855.

Ronald Volkman has been named as the starting halfback in the absence of captain Mitch Moses, who misses Round 1 due to soreness from a previous injury.

Head Coach Jason Ryles said, “Mitch is experiencing soreness from a previous injury, we’re taking a cautious approach to ensure his foot heals properly and he can play his best football for the team. We will continue to monitor Mitch’s recovery and make an assessment on a return date next week.”

Junior Paulo will Captain the side, and the Eels will kick off against the Storm on Sunday 9 March at 4:05pm at AAMI Park, Melbourne.

Williams at second row (I mentioned that last year btw) After seeing him play in the front row would have thought it was a foregone conclusion that he was playing in the front row.

Our bench seems really light still not a fan of Doorey but good luck to him. Would have rather have Sam on the bench.

Smith on the bench is also a positive moving forward

Moses injury must be worse than thought..

And we've got the bye in NSW Cup, so no clues as to who is fit but effectively suffered a straight demotion from last year's usual top 17/20... Greig, Bryce, Moretti, and of course Lussick (with the sympathy #22 on the NRL team list).

Injuries and suspension aside, I picked nearly all of this 1-17 back in November

1. Iongi
2. JAC (left wing)
3. Penisini
4. Lomax
5. Simonsson (Russel to start the year)
6. Brown
7. Moses
8. Paulo
9. Hands (unless we sign Brailey)
10. Lane
11. Kelma
12. Williams
13. Hopgood

14. Papalii or Lussick
15. Offa
16. Matto
17. Cartwright

Oh and Pou, I guess Ryles did surprise.
We bought Williams as a middle as I have been saying since we signed him.

I doubt Williams will be a first choice edge forward but Ryles might surprise. I’m keen to see if Guymer is an edge forward option. I assume Tuilagi and Cartwright will be the merkins, and we’ll soon buy a good one for 2026.

Given the opponent and the weaknesses in the rest of the squad, we've obviously taken the approach to not bother this week by resting Moses. Interesting to see how that plays out with the rest of the team to take the field.
