Parramatta are set to start Bryce Cartwright and Matt Doorey in the back row for their opening game of the season against the Storm on Thursday night.

The Eels’ back row from last year’s grand final has been completely wiped out, with injury, suspension and off-season departures forcing a reshuffle to Brad Arthur’s side.

Bryce Cartwright is set to start for the Eels for the first time since 2021.

Ryan Matterson (suspension), Shaun Lane(injury) and Isaiah Papali’i (joined Wests Tigers) are the key outs from last year’s decider.

Sources with knowledge of selections talking under the condition of anonymity told the Herald that Cartwright will feature in the Eels starting side despite not featuring in the trials. Not since 2021 has the former Panthers star featured in Parramatta’s run-on side.

It’s expected Canterbury recruit Doorey will partner him in the back row, with Panthers recruit J’maine Hopgood to start at lock.

stamina? Have we seen him more than 5 minutes to say he’ll be any good?
Well, I'm basing it on tct reports where he is at the top of the pack in those runs and m runs (whatever they are). If guth isnt there, he normally wins them.

He's mentally quite strong and can will his way.

If only he was faster.

I think what he copped last year shows his mental strengrh

I'll hold my judgement until I see some of them in a first grade match.

Papali'i has sent a high benchmark for some of these new blokes to start with.

His incredible first game against Brisbane in 2021 no one saw coming hard to replicate.

The ridiculous hype on Moimesea is similar to how Ogden got talked up in the off season last year.

I looked at his body and he has tiny calves.
Doorey looks stocky and Murchie had some power. Hopgood lacked power but awesome ball skills and decent footwork.

The young forward Matalele has excellent acceleration and power.

I'm sure you need to see some NRL before you judge but you can also tell a players athletic ability quite quickly. I didn't see anything from Moimesea that excited me.
But sure I will atleast give him 6 games to see what he has got. He could of been a bit crook etc.

I just finished watching Bellamy on NRL360 i feel his body language and some of his answers he wasn't as confident as he normally is in interviews. Especially in regards to the season and possibly the game.

Even when asked about the Round 1 record of not losing under him he sort of brushed it off as not important this week.

Hype ? I feel that Hopgood has hype. Moimoi2 might be lucky to play FG because early round reasons, but is he really in anyone’s best 17 ?
