Vidot to make NRL debut

Tuesday, July 07, 2009
Toyota Cup star centre Daniel Vidot will make his NRL debut this weekend against Newcastle, when the Raiders take on the Knights at EnergyAustralia Stadium on Saturday night.
Vidot comes into the side on the wing for Justin Carney, who was ruled out for the remainder of the season after breaking his leg against the Gold Coast Titans on Sunday.
Carney has undergone a successful surgery on his right leg to repair the breaks to his fibula and tibia and will return to rehabilitation training in a few weeks time once he can apply pressure back on his right foot.
The Raiders have been forced to make two other changes to their side for this weekends match with David Shillington (Qld) and Tom Learoyd-Lahrs (NSW) both being selected for State of Origin III.
This means Raiders forwards Scott Logan and Joe Picker will come back into the NRL side for the game against the Knights, after both showing strong form for Souths Logan in the Queensland Cup.
Joel Thompson also comes into the Raiders side for the first time in 2009 after being named on the bench for Trevor Thurling, while Glen Turner has been named as 18th man.
Raiders Coach David Furner said the inclusion of Daniel Vidot would give them a strong option out wide and said he believed he was ready for the step up to NRL level.
“Dan gets his chance this weekend with the injury to Justin Carney and he’s been one of the standout performers at Toyota Cup level this season,” Furner said. “He also gives us some good size and strength against a very physical Newcastle side.”
Furner congratulated both Learoyd-Lahrs and Shillington on their selection for Origin III and said they would come back better from the experience.
“It’s good to see those guys get some recognition for their good form over the last few weeks and I know they will do the job for their states,” he said. “They will learn a lot in camp and be able to bring that back to their team mates when they return.”

Big ups to Furner, he continues to show faith in the youngsters rather than going to the failed options.

Only thing missing is the reserve hooker but loving Vidot at wing and Joel Thompson off the bench. Don't know why Thurling was dropped though.

I am still concerned about the lack of a bench utility. But I'm pretty wrapped about Vidot and J.Thompson getting in so I won't complain...Too much.

Well Thompson is a utility just doesn't cover hooker. But if a back gets injured then we won't be stuffed like last week.

Suprised to see so many changes , why is Turner 18th man and not Trev. He must be injured. surely.

Glad Vidot gets a chance suprised purts didnt get recalled , I though Furner might of played it safe.

THurling must surely be injured because he should nto be dropped. He's one of our best on a weekly basis.

Thurling has been absolutely killing it! I lost count of the amount of try-savers he pulled off against the Titans... surely he must be injured/dropped for reasons other than form!

Well done to both TLL and Shillo for the Origin selections and to Dan Vidot who gets his shot, he looks a classy player in the Jarryd Hayne mould (maybe a bit more physical and less of a ball player though). Can see us troubling the Knights from both sides, particularly in the air with Vidot and Mona's in the side.

big thumbs up to furner for these selections.
I didn't think thompson will be considered until after his court case. Very excited to see how these two go.

he's definately been improving weekly since his injury/suspension but I don't think he's shown his last season form yet.

Its cause he hasn't had enough game time. Any player that is only getting 30 minutes will struggle to make an impact. Against Manly when he got 50 minutes he was finding some form.

It's a very strong backline - perfect combination of size and pace.

Forward pack is a little iffy without Shillo and Tom LL. Harrison and Tilse need big games.

Hopefully JT is given enough game time, if hes getting 30 minutes he won't be able to have much of an impact. Logan needs to stand up as well.

if logan brings his form from the start of the season the loss of shillington for logan is actually a gain

I'm with you on this one mate. Logan bends the line more often than shillington does. Somebody has to have a quiet chat to shillo and tell him he's a man mountain and should play like one. Hopefully a stint in origin will be the catalyst for him performing better throughout the rest of the year.
