So basically wingers and centres don't get penalised statistically for their worst defensive howlers because they end up where the ball isn't

Misleading. How bad was Neilsen yesterday turning himself around and facing his own goal line while Billy Slater ran past him to score. Doesn't get credited with a missed tackle, but that was a howler of a play.

fmd stats DO lie:crazy:. You obviously missed Nielson's 360 degree "Where did everyone go" dance that opened up a huge gap for Billy Slater. Defensive lines rely on partnerships between players. One player f*cking up can put huge pressure on another player defensively, yet that other player will be the one to wear the stat on his record.

maybe. i was too busy watching Manu fall off tackles to notice Neilson.

I remember Vatuvei missing one tackle in the lead up to the Waqa forward pass no-try. My read on that was that Neilson was caught too far infield and Vatuvei came in justifiably but missed a tackle on the centre. That's an error by both, Neilson (or possibly someone inside) has pushed in too far and the overlap has been created, Manu has tried to come up with a big play which you'd like him to complete, he's missed, but ultimately the overlap is created by the mistakes of the inside men.

If you can remember the other 3 missed tackles, what impact they had and whether he really had a good chance at making the tackles, I'd be interested to hear it.

e.g. are the stats men recording a missed tackle against Manu for the Slater try because his last ditch effort was unsuccessful after everyone inside him had gone missing?

Stats are awesome when used correctly - this is rarely the case. Here's an example from the stats given above..

"Hurrell - 103m, 13 hit ups, 11 tackles, 0 missed tackles.
Manu - 112m, 10 hit ups, 3 tackles, 4 missed tackles
Laumape - 59m, 7 hit ups, 0 tackles, 2 missed tackles.
Neilson - 63m, 5 hit ups, 8 tackles, 0 missed tackles."

Let's look at who the most effective runner of the ball might be. It would be reasonable to suggest that the most effective runner has the most metres per hit up, right?

Hurrell - 7.9
Manu - 11.2
Laumape - 8.4
Nielsen - 12.6

Now I don't mind Nielsen at all - but nobody is realistically going to agree that he is the most effective runner out of those four, even in that single game. Tada! The stats have told a lie.

Those metres per run stats look about right to me. Nielsen had a few 15 odd metres runs in both halves

The nervous, pessimist in me has a bad feeling about Saturday's game.

We'd be devastated to lose but, really, it can happen.

Carney always kills us. These Cronulla guys are all angry again too, since the ASADA thing's flared up in the media of late.

Looking at that lineup, I reckon both of these teams are man for man pretty even. Maybe the sharks slightly shade us in the front row.

fmd

They may not lie, but they certainly don't tell the full story.

Some examples:

Tackles - Player A is credited with 40 tackles compared to player B with 25 tackles. 30 of Player A's tackles were third man in, gentle flop around legs to bring the ball carrier to the ground. Player B's were all first or second tackler, big contact and wrestle, much harder work. Despite many less tackles, Player B's defensive effort may well have been as good or better than Player A's.

Meters: Prop A gets 150m, he happens to be the go to guy for returning kick offs and drop-outs, and gets a pile of easy unimpeded meters. Prop B gets 90meters, but all gained up the middle in regular play, most in the first 20 minutes of the game. Who played better?

Plus errors and missed tackles are decided at the discretion of the stats people and they are probably not much more competent than video referees.
